New tyres appear to cure carbon build up!

Featured Replies

4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's fitted last week which meant that the awful drone and vibration from my worn and saw-toothed Falken FK452's was gone!

The lack of drone and vibration has meant that my usual cruising speed has crept up above the previous point of endurable vibration/noise, so much so that the rev's are sat above 3,000 rpm for a good number of hours now whilst on the motorway (ahem).

1,000 miles in a short space of time later this appears to have cured my carbon build up problem (really rough cold idle, lack of pull when cold, stuttering when cold etc). All of these symptoms have seemingly vanished overnight (the car has had them for 9 months or so).

Any ideas if this is possible or am I kidding myself to avoid having to take it to bits to clean out the gunk?

I'm sure I've read somewhere before that the TFSI runs hotter over about 3000 rpm and that this can "burn off" baked on carbon. Urban myth or reality?

I am hoping that this apparent blessing continues beyond two days or that I don't wake up and find it's all been a dream!

Apparently there is a certain RPM where the engine runs lean (safely). At this point combustion temperatures increase and can allegedly burn off some deposits.

I give mine an Italian tune-up every so often when it feels a bit 'rough.'

Please note I have no real evidence for the above; but it does have some logic to it.
