essex or cologne, something i can stick a dirty great big card on

Why not go for the yankee V8 ?

the ford is an easy option. much less work involved

but i do keep thinking about the rover V8

The Rover V8 is bullet proof, and you could pick one up very easily from a Range Rover etc.

Try www.oldskoolford.co.uk ,have a look in the for sale bit, or Classic Ford Mag , there are loads of places breaking stuff , wish it was like that 10 years ago when i had my Essex powered MK1 Escort :(

I've got a 2.9i 1987 Ford Granada Scorpio (Auto) in my garage - it hasn't been run for 4 years but was working ok, I just never got round to selling it.

You are welcome to it if you can get it out of the garage - no charge, I'd be glad to get the space back :D

awesome!!! where are you?

The Ford V6 is fairly tough, but it's enormously heavy! It's iron, where the Rover V8 is aluminium.

The Rover V8 has far more tuning potential, and a range of stronger gearboxes. Parts are also cheaper.

The Rover V8 isn't entirely bullet-proof (no engine is) but it is pretty tough. And there are a lot of experts around, to answer questions!

i know where your coming from this kind man is offering me a car for free(well collection so include petrol and trailor costs) which will have it sorted

does anyone know if the 5 speed box from my 1.8cvh will fit the 2.9 V6??

Bengie, the box from the CVH won't go straight on, why not leave the Granada one on if it'll fit?

would just prefer a manual but can live with an auto :D

would simply be a case of getting a new bell housing for the 5 speed to fit if there is a problem with the auto

a friend says you can get em made for a couple hundred :confuse:

The 5 speed box, as used in the 1.6 and 1.8 Sierras, will evaporate if you so much as show it a V6. 5th gear uses different bearings, made of butter and rose petals. Although they're easy(ish) to get hold of, they're not the most robust of gearboxes.

The early 4-speed box (as used up to early 2.8 capri) was a better bet: tough and reliable. And with the correct dif, you won't miss 5th: the gearing was well-spaced, and good for a top speed of nearly 130 mph.

EDIT: if you're looking for a Sierra box with separate bellhousing, you'll struggle: most of them have been shoved into kitcars and modified classics. The bellhousing became an integral moulding, in, iirc, about 1988, so you couldn't change it to suit different engines.
