Synthetic - Castrol Edge 5w30 is recommended. Don't know exactly what brand the factory use but the top up supplied with my car is 5w30.

Just checked the pouch supplied with my car & it is Castrol Edge Professional long life III 5W-30 & carries the Skoda recommends logo.

Page 198 of the owners manual cover the types, I use Castrol Magnatec 5w30 for tops ups - mine seemed to use a reasonable amount for the first few hundred miles but that seems to have slowed down now (I have the 1.4TSi petrol).
