A very quick question on wheel widths please!

Featured Replies

I'm running a set of factory fitted summer alloys / tyres on my MkII Superb (225/45 R17 94W).

The alloys are 7.5J (7.5 inches wide?).

I've found a nice set of Audi winter alloys that are a match for my current wheels in all but one aspect - the width.

They are 8J.

Will this be a problem? My plan is to fit winter tyres of the same dimensions as my current summer tyres.

The only wheels Skoda recommend for my car are as follows (the ones in bold are currently fitted):

205/55 R16 94H M+S 6J x 16H2 ET50

205/55 R16 94V 7J x 16H2 ET45

225/45 R17 94W 7J x 17 H2 ET49

225/45 R17 94W 7.5J x 17 H2 ET49

225/40 R18 92J 7.5J x 18 H2 ET46

The Audi ones I've found are...

225/50 R17 94W 8J x 17 ET47

I'll get new tyres so will buy 225/45 instead of the 225/50 already fitted.

But will the 7.5J to 8J cause me issues?

Cheers!

No problems with 225 on an 8j - it's what BMW have fitted to standard on my car (and I've been fine with a 225 on the 8.5j rear too).

Its only half inch so shouldent be an issue. . .it all comes down to offset really (et) and tire selection

Use this to see how much more "inset" or "poke" your going to have. . .and try keep rolling diameter close to what it already is.

Brill, thanks guys.

Using the link tells me that the wheels will be 4.4mm closer to the suspension strut and stick out from the car a further 8.4mm.

Shouldn't interfere with the bodywork (he hopes!)...

Too late now though, I've bought the wheels and am picking them up tomorrow!

Fingers crossed.

My local tyre fitter has a set of Avon Ice Tourer ST (225/45 R17 94V) for £102 each including VAT and fitting.

The seller assures me they are clean, lets hope so as it's hard to tell from the pictures...

If the cars not lowered I can't imagine theyll be any problem at all :)

Ah, hang on, those are a6 wheels aren't they? They will be a 5x112 fitment??

The superb mk2 is also 5*112. :)

In regard to the 7.5J VS 8J, with the same offset, the 8J wheel will be 1/4" wider on both inside and outside (rather than 1/2" on either/or) as the measurement is taken from the centre of the wheel.  Obviously with varying offsets this isn't always true, but it will be with identical offsets.  Wheel geometry is an interesting science.  I remember it was only about 13 or 14 years ago I didn't even know about tyre sizes.....

They are off a 2007 Audi TT.

As devonutopia says, both these and my Superb have a PCD of 5x112.

Only thing is, if the wheel/tyre combination is not homologated for your vehicle does that not mean that legally it is unroadworthy?  It will certainly be interesting to see what your insurance company has to say.

I'm insured with Admiral and they are one of a number of insurance companies who signed up to the "winter tyres - the motor insurance commitment"...

https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Publications/Public/Migrated/Motor/ABI%20guide%20to%20winter%20tyres%20The%20motor%20insurance%20commitment.ashx

As a result they don't require their policy holders to notify them that they are fitting winter wheels or tyres nor charge a premium.

Still, however you look at it an 8J wheel isn't listed by Skoda as suitable for my car. I'm sure if it came to it Admiral could wriggle out of a claim.
