DMF to SMF with uprated Clutch Pros / Cons

Featured Replies

Hi.

My clutch is slipping and i will soon need a new one.

In light of my impending dpf removal / Remap / Intercooler / air filter / exaust and Hybrid turbo upgrades putting out possibly 220 - 230 ish

Is it worth replacing the DMF with an SMF at the same time as an uprated clutch.  What sort of effect will that have on

Noise

Performance

Longevity

Vibration

The clutch and DMF I have in now has until recently, been ok.  I dont want to replace something that I might live to regret and of course they might get the clutch out to find the Flywheel is scored and it need replacing anyway.  And then have my wife banging on about wasting money.

But lets face it.  They are a waste of money! But good fun.

I have an 08 VRS PD TDI 170 Estate

Of all the searches I have done I can't decide.

Any thoughts guys

Cheers

So I have been looking around and most people seem to be rating the SACHS clutches, is an updated clutch really only

£146 from euro car parts. Is this part number Part No.: 641442060 really an updated clutch, or just a standard clutch made by SACHS.

I have been happy with the DMF up till now, so think I will stay with it, but I have a sideline question. Until the garage has the car apart, is there any way for them to tell if it needs a new flywheel.

Personally, I'd convert to SMF. My DMF shat itself and they're a common failure around these parts. I now have a Southbend Stage 3 Daily (rated to 470lbft) along with a SMF and have never looked back since. I fitted it at the same time as stronger engine mounts so they give a bit more noise, but I found the following:

Noise: Rattles like mad on tickover - sounds like an apache.

Performance: Almost OEM feel if not slightly firmer pedal. Doesn't slip with 340lbft being chucked at it (as you would hope!)

Longevity: Far superior to a DMF as less chance of it failing. I've had mine for 6 months now zero issues.

Vibration: Noticeable in the cabin, but as I said, I installed firmer engine mounts at the same time so they contribute further towards this on their own. You will notice more vibration with just a SMF, though.
