Yet another electric window problem.....

Featured Replies

I have used the search feature but can not find a similar scenario to what I am experiencing. It's an 05 VRs.

I think it's coincidence but I changed the battery the other day and since then the windows aren't working all the time. Or very often at all for that matter.

Going to the gym the other night they didn't work on the way there but did on the way back and then yesterday they didn't work at all.

Things I have tried so far

Disconnecting battery

Swapping the fuses about

Disconnecting the plug in the door hinge

Initially swapping the fuses got it all working again this morning. Locked the car, unlocked it and tried again and no longer working. Bought new fuses and still no joy.

I have unplugged all the plugs in the drivers door hinge (checked wiring for damage, none found in either door) after doing this and plugging them back in it all worked again. Then locked unlocked etc and then it didn't work again.

I then moved the car on the driveway, took the fuses out and back in again and voila, all working again. I stayed in the car and locked, unlocked, keys in ignition and all working, did this a couple of times, also opened door, then closed again before locking and all was ok. Then I got out locked unlocked, turned key in ignition and nothing.

I also put the old battery back in just to take the new battery out of the equation, still no working windows.

I don't know what to try next as I believe there are several components to this system and I don't want to spend money unnecessarily replacing them.

I hope somebody can shed some light as I am lost for ideas now as to what to look at next

Me too. I'm afraid. Did the same last winter as well.

I assume that you did the following first after reconnecting the battery...

Electrically operated power windows do not operate

If the battery of the car has been disconnected and then reconnected, the electrically operated power windows do not operate. The system must be activated. Proceed as follows in order to re-establish the function:

• turn the key in the lock of the driver door into the closing position and hold it there until all of the windows have closed.

• release the key.

• once again insert the key and turn it into the closing position for about 3 seconds.

My bet is on the window switch.

When you say they don't work, have you lent over and tried the passengers window switch? Does that work?

My tuppence worth is its the weather/water ingress. My windows work perfectly during the summer but as soon as there is wet weather/when it gets colder? they pack up and work very intermittently depending on how dry its been.

Have no clue where to start as its so random! Sorry can only offer my experience, too tight to take it to a dealer for them to spend hours trying to work out the fault :)

I tried the key in the door lock method which again works sometimes. It's not guaranteed and will work if I have been able to get the windows to work via the switch.

The passenger switch hasn't worked for ages, but as the switch on the drivers side worked to open/close it I wasn't too bothered about that. Again couldn't find a reason why that may not have worked!

It seems as though by pulling the fuses you are kind of resetting something. You can hear a faint click noise as if they are engaging when you insert them again.

I had a other look at the weekend which was a waste of time in hindsight. I can't see what could be getting damp/wet all inside the door and the wiring etc all seems dry?

I didn't realise how much I use my windows until I can't use them :(

As it a newer one it seems trying to find a 6Y2 motor is near on impossible. But it could get costly trying to swap the various components of the system.

I may have resolved my problem.

I took the motor and switch out the car on Tuesday. I stripped the switch down to the circuit board and removed the 'chip holder' on the motor. I then put them on/near the radiator where they have been sat until this evening.

I reassembled and refited just now and everything appears to be working again. I have locked the car and unlocked it numerous times and after unlocking again the windows still work as before.

After people suggesting damp etc and having not read of anybody drying out the potential faulty components, I thought it was worth a shot as it's cost nothing to do.

Will keep you posted over the coming days as to whether it stays that way!! Fingers crossed.

Update.

It is now just over a week since I last posted.

The following morning they didn't work :( swapped the fuses around and then they worked!! Ever since then they have worked consistently. So my advice for others is removed the switch and motor and allow them to 'dry out' as it seems to have got mine working again and cost me nothing.

Thanks for the update. Did the same with mine and refitted the motor this morning and it worked. Now it's raining will have to see if it still works in the morning!

That will be the test for me too, although it rained Friday and hasn't caused it to stop working yet. Fingers crossed for you
