Altenator Pulley Sqeaking

Featured Replies

Hi guys my altenator pulley has developed a sqeak apon closer inspection I can see metal fragments all around the area.

My question is, how hard is it to change the pulley? I know you need the special tool but other than that is it an easy job to do?

I'm thinking I might as well do the auxillery belt and tensioner at the same time.

It needs to come out to change the pulley. Do you have a windy gun, they're a bugger to loosen off?

Yeah I have a workshop with all the necessary tools apart from the splined tool i've yet to get.

I've just picked up the belt and tensioners just waiting for the alternator tool.

Would you recommend to take the altenator off the car or do it with it on?

You probably won't be able to get the tool into the pulley with the alternator in the car.

this happened to me about a month ago spitting metal fragments into the engine bay so i ended up buying a new altenator,  new pulley and tensioner from TPS, then my battery went dead. Car now running well for 141k.

If its the clutch pulley. it's a 10 minute job with the correct spline tool. Also can be done without removing alternator.

I have all the parts i'm just waiting for the splined tool to arrive.

Last night I went for a drive now the sqeaking noise has gone but it's turned into more of a bearing graunch, about a mile from my house the battery light came on the dash. Should the pulley have deteriorated that quickly?

It's thrown the belt off! That's unbelievable less than two days from hearing a squeak now it's spat the belt off. Great.

Mine started making the grinding noise but I was driving the car for a good week before I got around to changing it. Yours must of just had a catastrophic failure. I bought the tool in my local motor factors for €18 literally took less than 20 minutes to do.

after it was removed there was a throw when spun which at sometime might have slipped the belt. cars always cost near to christmas. typical.

Tell me about it my head gasket is gone. 2 weeks to go swmbo is getting a hug for Christmas!

Lol yep i've had that eerie feeling for a couple of weeks now. In many ways i'm glad it's just this fingers crossed she's in pretty good nick for her age.

After another look the pulley has completely broken away from the clutch mech. I put my hand on the pulley and withdrew it from the car lol.

Right, finally got around to replacing the pulley and belt.

One problem and i'm not sure if it's just me being a do'nut. When I tried to fit the new tensioner, the thing wouldn't fit properly into position. There's a little tab looking bit which is supposed to fit into a recess, but with the new one it just wouldn't fit in there properly. I tried the old one it fitted perfectly but the new one just will not.

Am I doing something wrong? I've got the old one in there at the minute and everything seems fine but ideally I would like to fit the3 new one.
