Towbar options?

Featured Replies

Got a pre fl vrs and need a towbar (to pull a horse box)

I want a detachable one so I can remove it (they look rubbish).

What would people recommend? Is it a skoda fit job or can anyone do it?

Anyone can do it. Even DIY. The only issue is the electrics and how sophisticated you need them to be. I got a Westfalia and it's top quality and VAG use them as OEM.

I suggest you try their website for instructions and also do a search here since there are many threads on this subject.

I don't need instructions as I won't be fitting it. My question was does it have to go to skoda (because of the canbus or whatever the electrickery is) or can anyone ie towbar place do it. As for doing a search I'm on my phone and the search function is rubbish hence why i posted.

Thanks for the reply though, I'll check westfalia out.

Get a Witter. Go on their website and you will see you can have it fitted when and where you like and at a reasonable price. A Skoda fitted one could be double and I have known dealers contract fitting out to towbar specialist ,charge you full whack whilst getting it fitted at a decent discount. So making a packet for doing nothing. I know as that happened to me when I ordered one from Skoda.

Had Witter fitted to mine in about 1.5 hrs.

Depends on what you are wanting but first of all, do not go to Skoda, most likely they will sub contract the job to a specialist and charge over the odds for it. I would google towbar fitters in your area. There is a national company called Towbar Express http://www.towbarexpress.co.uk/index.html

How far you go depends on how much money you want to spend cheapest would be a fixed flange towbar with bypass electrics, the most expensive would be a detachable towbar with vehicle specific electrics, or any combination in between. Most reputable companies like this one can fit the vehicle specific electrics and have the necessary computer to recode the vehicle so it knows it has a towbar fitted. That is the option I went for with a swan neck bar and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks Ian,

It's a detachable I want as I won't be using it all the time. Next door neighbours an auto electrician with the relevant computer vcds tool, he did also mention a bypass relay. I looked at witter but they where near on £500. I'll do a bit of googling and see whose local

A bypass relay is the cheap option and you won't get any of the functionality you get with the vehicle specific kit like the reverse sensor and fog light disable. The one I would be most interested in is the towing stability control as I know things can get a bit rocky if the horse in the back gets a bit restless.

How about that?

Ian

Just had a detachable fitted to my Blackline with a bypass relay and detachable ball and it was £290. All done in 4 hrs and the single electrics spins around out of site. Really neat job
