1200 TSI engine

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Despite having a new Octavia I'm already doing my homework for my next car and I'm looking at a Yeti with the 1200 TSI engine fitted with the DSG gearbox.

My query or concerns are this.....

My present motoring has been drastically reduced due to retirement etc. and the majority of my driving is usually local around town etc. however

I do travel long distances down through France 2/3 times a year.

During this time I can clock up a couple of thousand miles.

My days of fast driving and acceleration are long gone but I do like to cruise at 60/70 mph.

My concerns are whether or not this 1200 engine is up to the job or not.

All opinions and advice greatly appreciated.

All the best for Christmas and the new year.

I had similar thoughts and reservations but having driven our 1.2tsi (manual) for nearly eight months now I can categorically say it's well up to the job. I think the DSG would have been a better option with the 1.2 than the manual box (we opted for manual as we live in France and if we ever sell the car then it will be easier - the French don't generally go for auto boxes). Lovely car, super engine!

It's a brilliant set up with the DSG box. I had similar reservations but after reading all the press comments picking out this as the best option, I took the plunge. You will never regret it, plenty of power for this sized car for most, and so quiet, even when dropping down to 4th gear up steep hills. You hardly notice the engine noise in the gear changes. There are plenty of posts relating to this combination on the forum, look a few up and you will see not a single negative remark.

Hi Tailendcharlie,

My previous Yeti was a 1.2 Tsi, albeit a manual one. Did many journeys on the continent fully loaded and with 4 up. The engine was very responsive and was up to the job.

I'd have no concerns about getting one.

It's a brilliant little engine. The last few cars I've had have been petrol and deisel between 120bhp and 160bhp and I could not believe how this 1.2 performs. I've only done just over 1000 miles but it is quiet, smooth and amazingly responsive. If I had driven the car without knowing the engine size I would have said a 1.6 or 1.8.

My mileage now is about 7,000 per year with most runs being less than 10 miles and this engine suits that perfectly. I'm only getting about 37mpg (genuine). This might improve to about 38/40 as the engine loosens up but I'm not that bothered.

The DSG is taking some getting used to but that is probably just me and it is growing on me the more mileage I rack up. Most of the roads I use are single carriage and it overtakes slower traffic much better and quicker than I thought a 1.2 ever could. Up to now I can honestly say I do not miss the bigger more powerful engines.

Everything wot 'e said.  Same mpg too.

Ditto to what's been said I use mine similar to you ,average 37/38 around town but on a longer run I did 44 brim to brim.best car I've had enjoy

Mine's a 1.2 TSi with the manual box and another plus vote. 5,000 miles on the clock with a mix of short local runs and the occasional 100-150 mile round trip and I'm getting just shy of 40mpg per tankful. I've never found the engine wanting it just quietly gets on with what it's got to do. Fully agree with Spottydog - if I didn't know better I'd be convinced it was a noticeably bigger motor. This is my first Skoda so I can't speak for other models in the range but the 1.2 Yeti hits the sweet spot for the driving I now do. Blew my £15000 budget by £5000 when i signed on the line but never a regret.

Thanks for all your replies fellas.

I'm quite amazed at all your comments regarding this engine.

It certainly would appear to fit my future motoring needs and coupled with the size of the Yeti I would think that this is the way forward.

Once again.....thanks very much for your comments and opinions.

I've also ordered the 1.2 TSI and think it will be perfect for my driving needs, mostly short journeys and maximum annual mileage of around 8000 miles

I love my 1.2 TSi

I've really enjoyed learning how to get the best out of the car by keeping within the powerband in each gear.  Once you've mastered this (if driving the manual), the pace available really can be surprising.

Add to that the decent economy, lowish road tax and purchase price, it really is a no-brainer for someone doing less than 10-15k (mostly A road/city) miles/year.

Another plus vote here. I have done just over 15,000 miles in my 1.2 Tsi DSG and true MPG so far is 40.9. As with all cars fuel consumption depends on how you drive. Like you I am now retired and while I am not a slow coach neither am I a boy racer. Ample power and the 1.2 with DSG is just one of those really happy unions. You will love it and it is so quiet and refined. Lovely!!

Everything wot 'e said.  Same mpg too.

Same for me too.
