MK2 Octavia vRS.. Roof Seam, Paint Cracking! Skoda Warranty?

Featured Replies

While giving my Octy vRS a good clean, polish and wax today I felt rough paint along the roof seam. On closer inspection the paint is actually cracking along this seam and with a quick search of the forum it seems this isn't the first time this issue has been seen and is pretty common on the MK2 Octavia's along with the boot seam cracking.. Both of which are sealed with silicone then painted. A picture of the faulty paintwork can be seen below...

I have recently had to have both sides of the car painted due to vandalism, keyed down both sides, but the respray did not touch the cracking area. I have been in touch with the bodyshop that completed the work and they said the cracking was noted but the extent of their works did not go onto the roof and it can be seen where the new paint finishes.

With my vRS being a 2006 model, having covered 107k, do you think Skoda UK would be at all interested in assisting with this as a warranty issue? Obviously with it being a known issue both on the MK2 Octavia and Fabia? It has full service history.. First 3 years with Skoda, then independent VAG specialists since...

Any opinions welcomed or people having pursued similar issues with Skoda UK and their results..

At that age and mileage I'd think your unlikely to get anywhere easily.

Myself I'd probably just seal it with some clearcoat and cross my fingers the water hasn't got in.

The corrosion warranty is a bitch to enact, I don't know anyone who has won anything through it with any manufacturer.

There no corrosion so it wouldn't come under that part of the warranty anyway, it would come under the paint warranty but that's only 3 years...

I'm aware it's not corrosion, but more a manufacturing defect with the model of car... I'm probably going to go down the route of having the roof vinyl wrapped if I can't get anywhere with Skoda. The bodyshop doesn't think it will get any worse than it is now as the car has probably flexed as much as it is going to.. And tbh if I do get it repainted it will probably just happen again as the car is still flexing..

I am going to call the dealer tomorrow who it was serviced by for the first 3 years of its life and see what warranty claims got put through for it. I am pretty sure the boot has been done under warranty as there is a poor paint job been done on it and I bet it was to cover up the cracking paint issue there.. Which has now also reared its head again as well as the roof!

Surely if it's a known design defect then Skoda would have something is place to resolve it?

I was successful with a anti corrosion claim with Vauxhall in my last Astra. Was rusting in the door shut just under a kick plate and that got done FOC.. However, that was when the car was 4.5 years old, I know I am talking about 8 years almost with the Octavia and no visible rust signs as yet...

Unfortunately I have just been to Skoda with the exact same issue; they really weren't interested. Just saying anything could have caused it such as excess pressure when polishing?!?

Safe to say I walked away from the man without a word and drove off. Couldn't even entertain talking to him after such a stupid brush off answer.

I am sure my local dealer would try and brush it off aswell, this is why I am going to contact Skoda UK direct and see how far I get..

I'll do the same.

Surely if we can prove this is happening on more than one MK2 Octavia and it's not a isolated issue then they may be more inclined to help in some way?

How old is yours Stu08?

My vRS is a 2006 model.

Prior to the stupid answer I was asked did my car have FSSH? Which it doesn't, but is serviced by myself every 3000 miles.

I don't see how filling an engine with oil, or changing discs and pads at a Skoda dealership will prevent paint cracking on my roof?!

I have the exact same cracks you are describing mines an 06 and my friends is starting aswell his is a 56

I am really starting to wonder if this was an issue on early MK2 Octavia's? Especially ones built in 2006... So far from this thread we have 4 2006 cars with this issue..

I am going to try and call Skoda UK this week (depending on how busy my first week back at work is!) and see if I can get anywhere.. Going into a dealer I am sure I will not be taken seriously.

Could be on to something there.

I'll call them too. May even link them to this thread so that they can see there are others out there with this issue.

Good idea Stu... They can see it building up in here...

There is a guy with a 55 plate Octavia at my work, going to check his tomorrow for the same issue.. But his is an estate and is a left hooker originally bought in Germany..

Right, I have been on the dealer that looked after my car within its Warranty Period - Marlborough Motors, Isleworth - and got a full breakdown of what they did to it under warranty. Really helpful women on the service desk too!

Basically, apart from first and second services, it got taken it to have a ECU update, brake light bulb changed (due to a message coming up on Maxidot) and due to 'vibration between 40-70mph' - which then turned out it had tyres at kwik fit and they hadn't balanced them properly! Must have had a dense first owner!

So sadly, nothing there relating to any roof or paint issues. Next stop is Skoda UK, just in case it had warranty work done elsewhere.. Marlborough Motors said they will have a full list of warranty jobs they have paid out for on any Skoda - Im going to check its history with them before going in with the paint issue I think!

I tried to get the boot seam sorted under warranty. Unfortunately, Skoda weren't interested and my car was 4 years old. I even pointed customer services to a post on here!

I wish you well but don't think you'll get anywhere.
