Time to remove old turbo and fit new one

Featured Replies

Getting a GTB1756VK with a manifold already welded on but got a few questions for folk in the know...

1. How would long would it take to remove the old turbo and fit the new one? - might have access to a garage lift.

2. Exactly what gaskets do i need?

3. Is it as simple as remove oil turbo and oil feed - take it i will dump lots of oil?, and fit gaskets new extended oil feed?

4. I have a txautosports FMIC will the stock piping mate upto the GTB turbo?

Cheers

I've recently done mine, it completely depends how competent you are but it took me around 4 and a half hours all in all but I had some stubborn downpipe nuts that didn't want to come off!

I replaced, exhaust manifold to block gasket, turbo exhaust to downpipe gasket and inlet manifold gasket, and the oil return or feed gasket, think it was the return as it came with a gasket.

Once you get going it's nice and easy though, just remember to clock your turbo and mate it with the one you've taken off. Glad someone told me that when I did it .

Mine didn't dump any oil as the car was stood still over night so it hadn't been run. I can't advice you on your turbo as I have a different one  to you mate.

Okay great stuff thanks mate

Details in my project thread of everything required.

You will need to alter your downpipe is biggest job if you can't/haven't got a welder?

Removing turbo is pretty easy imo, most of work done from top undrr bonnet, but you will need access from underneath to do the oil return line, lower turbo mount bracket and boost pipes.

Regarding your boost hoses it depends if you get the compressor housing outlet cut off and rewelded on facing straight out, makes sorting the pipes out much easier.

Parts required are, inlet manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, GTB turbo to downpipe gasket, some 11mm id oil resistant hose for oil return, a 63mm to 51mm silicone reducer to join turbo intake to TIP, GTB flange to weld to downpipe, oil feed pipe.

You ideally need to make up a bracket for the lower turbo to block mount to take some strain off manifold.

Also you will need to set up the stop screw and actuator, this can be a pain and take a while.you will need VCDs or have a m8 that has got it to set up stop screw and actuator.
