Gross train weights ( towing )

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Having been scuppered in the past with towing weights not adding up to match gross train weights, i thought I pop a post on before I go looking.

Am i safe to add gross vehicle weight to braked trailer weight to come up with total train weight?

The car I use for towing at the moment is 1600kg, allows a ~500kg payload and says it has 1300kg braked trailer ability but a Gross train weight of 3050kg which means I can't atually fully load vehicle and tow something 1300kg which isn't very useful.

What is the case with the Octavia?

Cheers

It varies slightly between Octavia models, but for a VRS Estate the values are:-

Kerb Weight: 1372Kg

Payload: 566Kg

Roof Load: 75Kg

Towing Unbraked: 720Kg

Towing Braked: 1600Kg

Skoda do not state a gross train weight, but this is usually just the sum of vehicle weight + braked tow weight + 2 occupants. The Octavia estate is rated to hold 20-30Kg more than the hatch, most probably due to it's different rear suspension setup.

So, 1372 + 1600 + 2x passengers at 75Kg each = 3122Kg, give or take ~100Kg.

If your current car cannot handle the requirements @ 3050Kg, neither will an Octavia. You'll need a large 4x4 to get substantially over 3000Kg.

What ever happens, you must not exceed the gross train weight of the vehicle otherwise you will be in breach of construction and use regulations. If you get pulled over by the rozzers and vosa who then weigh your car you will not be able to continue your journey and may be prosecuted.

indeed which is why I'd like to know how Skodas are typically calculated as i don't want to fall foul of a similar trap of my Renault, if it is as calculated above it is not very useful, gross train weight has to be specified by the manufacturer on the chassis plate, it is the big number for car + trailer, manufacturers don't deem this info important enough to actually put it in there technical specifications though it seems. :wonder:
