You don't even need one, you'll just lose power and filtration quality.

Thats a matter of debate, needing one or not

If you where to fit a more powerful turbo to the car then Panel Filters can be unreliable since they can be sucked out of shape and position, a problem you wont share with a fitted induction kit with a cone filter.

If you waned one, I would personally only be interested in one with an enclosed cone filter and ducked intake kind of more like this

this was only with a pd150 turbo.

That picture again tom, you are just about the only person I've ever heard of who's had problems with a standard panel filter that wasn't down to incorrect airbox lid retention...

OR WAS IT?

There's a few members on here who have had problems with the standard panel filters once running bigger turbos.

Most of them had badly fitting lids or missing clips.

How would missing clips cause it to break like that? You can clearly see thats down to the rubber perishing and braking while the seal was correctly seated.

Because even one missing clip or a badly fitted lid will not clamp the filter element in place properly and it can get pinched and tear or come adrift completely, once it has started to move or tear serious failure usually follows. I have seen many standard airboxes which had more than one clip missing and the lid tends to distort with engine heat over time until it no longer fits properly. Some replacement elements are not up to OE standards and the closed cell foam seal is too soft and spongey and softens even more when hot, these can pull out of the locating groove, particularly if the lid is slightly misshapen.

Sorry guys didn't mean to start this banter :/

It's not banter, banter is locker-room bull****.

This is a frank discussion about what works and what doesn't from people who know. This is a technical forum, you should expect the occasional difference of opinion. It's not a biggie, we're all still friends.

oh your boring witty comments on another thread ? think you need to take a look about the forum a bit more as there's a few people who's had done this. The air box was correctly fitted with no broken clips.

even if the problem is poor fitting, ether way a cone filter does not share the same risks

The problem with many aftermarket cone filters is the lower standard of filtration they provide, a turbo engine needs a higher level of filtration than you can get get away with on a N/A engine otherwise fine abrasive particles are not filtered out and they 'grit blast' the soft alloy impeller leading to impeller erosion.

It's been seen many times on here and will be seen again as long as people keep fitting bad filters designed to increase performance on a N/A engine.

An air filter has one primary function only, to filter the inlet air efficiently, as long as it does that job properly all other considerations are secondary.

i may start a new topic to ask about this closer the time comes that i want to fit an induction kit on my own vrs, one of many plans i have lined up but for now next in line is the suspension am hoping to have completed come the start of summer, but since i do want more power, currently running at around 198, i want it up to around 250, i am planning on an induction kit, i have already had a k&n panel filter suck out of shape on me, am currently running with a pipecrossover so will see how that goes, but since u say most cones have a lower standard of filtration, was hoping  maybe you know of a better quality one which will better protect my turbo,

am currently running the pd150 which i inherited  when i brought the car, however some point down the line hopefully before the end of the year, its going to have the GTB2260, or the 2266 maybe if i can find a sweet enough deal on one.

I chose the s2000 filter aswell based on cost and also the fact that if its ok for a 240bhp n/a engine. Then 175bhp turbo diesel will be fine. Its an oem paper cone filter.

I wouldnt go for a foam one again I don't think. Especially as these are 12quid off ebay :)

Im sure I already asked this but ive forgot the answer lol, do the s2k filters fit over the maf and then just tighten with a jubilee clip or do I need a silicone adapter? Will be fitting one when I've had a back box put back in to quieten it

once you have the whole airbox assembly off, you'll see that the MAF has a sleeve. the S2000 filter slides over the top of that and then you tighten with a jubilee (70-90mm)

Any chance of a picture of what this filter looks like when fitted?

And when you say s2000 filter, are you talking about the Honda s2000?

Cheers I though it would fit like my old k&n but just wanted to be sure. I'm working in Sheffield on Friday so might call to ecp and get one along with a pollen filter when I have a look at it tomorrow if it needs one.

Yeh a honda s2000

Its a common mod on the 1.8t engine as its a genuine cheaper good qaulity cone air filter

Does your s2000 filter have slits in the neck to so when you tighten it it will close as I've just bought one and it's a solid neck, is that right and it will tighten anyway with a jubilee clip round it?

It won't tighten but it's incredibly easy for you cut small slots using a hacksaw so that it will.
