Featured Replies

installed this thisafternoon on our dc and now it wont boot it just gets to applying settings and thats it can get in in safe mode and stopped the services that it just added but still fook all :(

anyone !!!!

Not got round to playing with WUS yet. But looking too in the next few months. Were still on SUS.

WUS/WSUS is ace (IMHO).

Don't want to worry you but I had a DC do this at a customer site - it took about 24 yours to present a crtl-alt-del screen then 2 hours to get to desktop after logging in.

I ended up transferring the AD onto another server and reinstalling Windows on the first one - after trying loads of other stuff. Nightmare. 15 hours in a windowless server room.

my boss was very happy to be blaiming me for the fault when it had bugger all to do with what id been playing with !!! maybe now he will buy me a test server

Test servers are the only, only way to get a reliable amount of uptime.

I've finally secured a named license for myself with MS, so I should be able to legally test any MS software I need for my job. 2003 Server will be on a laptop near me soon :)

For test Servers, get your self a copy of MS Virtual Server 2005 and build "Guest" servers on a host box. Its a god send for test environments and means you dont have lots of physical servers hanging around.

Example server like a HP Proliant DL380 G4, 4 XEON Processors and about 8 gig RAM and enough disk space can easily run 7 Virtual guests, each with 1 gig of RAM allocated, and that still leaves 1 gig for the OS.

Its a 2 U server, so compare that to having 8 physical servers racked, and the indiviual cost, and you have quite a saving on your hands.

Down side is it only supports "single" processors at the moment, so if you have any multithreaded apps, MSVS will be useless to you. THe next version will support Hyper/Multithreaded processing.
