2002 Audi A4 1.8T Problems, help please?

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have a 2002 Audi A4 with the 1.8t petrol engine. Since I got it last summer, it's used abit of oil, around half a litre per 5000 miles, which wasn't an issue.

2 Weeks ago I put a litre in, today on around a 8mile journey from my home to school the car started smoking white, blue smoke a hell of alot. It got worse progressively but no warning lights, it also started to lose power. I stopped, checked the oil and it was nearly dry, even though I check it ever week, so it had used a tonne in a short period of time. It also had the dreaded gunk around the oil filler cap and dip stick, but coolant is still nice.

I left the car to cool, came back after my lesson. I had to put 2 litres in for it to come towards the top of the dipstick, which is a hell of alot.

I drove the car home just now and it was smoking, but not as much but only when I was putting my foot down.

It also lacked power and hesitated when I tried to get upto cruising speed. I checked the oil level again after the 8mile journey and it has already gone half way down the dipstick.

There is no leaks.

I am afraid that the turbo is gone, or maybe headgasket issues? But as the coolant is still perfect, i'm not sure. Help!

White/blue smoke is normally an indication of oil and water mixing in the combustion chambers.

If I were you I would get the head gasket looked at ASAP before it causes too much damage.

Sounds to me like your turbo has failed.  :(

Went away on a truck today, have to wait till monday I guess now...

I have a feeling it's the head or turbo too, but leaning towards turbo as is 11 years old on original and heads don't seem to go on these engines.

Anyway, can only wait and see now... Bye bye cash!

So if anyone is interested, yes it was the turbo that went.

So the Audi garage quoted over 2200 quid, lol... Really disappointed in how they have acted espically since the car is 11 years old and it has had every service with them.

Found someone who will do it for 700, but still ridiculous.
