Strange noise on cold start and an aero wiper query

Featured Replies

Hello chaps,

Couple of queries

1) The VRS has been making a strange noise when starting from cold. The engine turns over fine and then after two or three second delay there is a screech not dissimilar to a slipping belt, this lasts for a few seconds and is replaced by a "tick, tick tick" and then a short mechanical grinding noise. All in all it lasts no more than ten seconds. It only happens when the temperature is really cold (sub 5 deg C). The noise is audible from outside of the car as well as in.

I've had the cambelt and tensioner changed the other week, the problem pre-dates this anyway and has persisted after the change so i don't think its the cambelt. I asked them to check the Aux belt while they were on and they reported all in order. I don't think its the SAI as i replaced several of the failing rivets with bolts a while back, and I also don't think its the starter motor as I've listened to a number of youtube clips for failing starters on Golf's/Jettas and that noise seems to be much shorter and more mechanical sounding.

I did try and get a sound clip of the noise today, but it was fairly mild today so no noise - will try again tomorrow.

2) Does anyone know if the aero wipers from a Passat B5 will fit a MKI VRS, ive been after doing Aero wiper for a while but they're a bit steep to buy, a relative is chopping in a B5 Passat soon and i was wondering if i could persuade him to do a wiper arm swap if they'll go

Thanks

Noise could be auxiliary belt tensioner starting to fail?.

Sounds like the secondary air pump is on it's way out. You can delete it, you don't need it. If you search Secondary Air Pump it will come up with all the info you need.

Secondary air pump OR classic vag starter motors!

I'm pretty certain it isn't SAI as I've already done the rivet repair, and it isn't a whooshing type noise, which is what it seems to be from YouTube vids etc.

Interestingly, I've set the climatronic to 'Econ' the last couple of days and that seems to have quelled the noise, will still try and get a sound clip up today.

Cheers

could be the air con clutch in need of attention, but would check the belt tensioner when you are in that area.

Bet its the starter motor.Mind sometimes does it when its really cold.

I did wonder if it could be the Alternator Clutch Pulley but I've checked that today and it seems to be fine (will only spin in one direction as it should). I'm not so sure about my theory of it being AirCon related as i usually leave the Climatronic in Auto and it has been operating fine (other than the noise) all summer and winter long. I think you could be right about the Auxiliary Tensioner, is there any way i can check it/visually inspect it to be sure?

Still trying to get a sound clip, but as per usual after months of it on every startup, now that i'm actually looking to fix the problem i cant recreate it!

Cheers

Gaz, does your starter motor issue on the VRS sound like this?

If so then that's not the noise that's coming form mine, mines longer and higher pitched, I've had a few people come up to me on hearing it and tell me that my "fan belt is slippling" and it does indeed sound more like a belt

Yes thats the noise my starter makes. If yours sounds like a belt slipping I'd get it looked at asap just to be on the safe.

I measured the passat wipers of a colleagues passat recently.... no they wont fit! golf only

Alright guys, got a clip of the sound at last: https://www.dropbox.com/s/u20j2cv8vatbqyj/VIDEO00050.3gp

Took the car to the local VW Specialist today and asked them to look over it. They've checked the belt and tensioner and all the pulleys but couldn't find anything wrong, or even reproduce the noise :(

If you're still looking for aero wiper blades the Mk4 Golf R32 has aero blades and these fit the Mk1 vRS

Found these on eBay too
