Can't decide what to do...

Featured Replies

Not really for Fabia 1 forum but where I spend most my time so posting here.

My golf GTI has developed a problem, head gasket I think but haven't looked into it. I can't decide if it's worth fixing and selling or breaking it for parts.

It's an immaculate 2000 VW Golf GTI Highline addition, 2.0 petrol.

They seem to be worth about £1000 but with the fault not sure what it's worth. Hence me thinking maybe more in parts.

So what's your valuation for the complete car?

Diagnose properly and if it is head gasket if break it personally. I would never buy a car which has advertised 'new headgasket' it always spells trouble.

It's in very good condition mate but I don't imagine it's worth an awful lot, with it being a 2.0 petrol, high tax ect

Advertise it on ebay for spares or repair, put a decent reserve on it just in case it goes for peanuts, you may lose the advertising costs but at least you'll be able to gauge the amount of interest.

If your pretty sure it will go for a £1000 just do the head gasket yourself and sell it that way you'll get maximum return.

Unless its low mileage, owners with full history, long tax and mot etc i wouldnt throw money at it tbh unless you can do the work yourself and intend to keep it

If it was me, id just break it

Mileage is over 100k now.

That's the annoying thing... I can do the head gasket for next to nothing, very easy job! But even with a new head gasket I honestly think it's worth about £800.

But the parts...

Golf parts

Seats - £100

Alloys - £100

Cat - £100

Scrap / chassis (at end) £100

Arm rest - £60

Brushed steel - £150

Radio - £20

CD player - £20

Rear lights - £40

Key £10

Locking wheel nuts £15

And anything els people would want.
