Seat foam - where can you buy some?

Featured Replies

basically i want to have a go at making my seats more supportive.

i have my original seats as a blank canvas so thought "why not!" then i was going to retrim them in cloth myself to match one of my Flocked Dashboards

but does anyone know where i can get seat foam type material from? preferably in like a block so i can carve it to the shape i want

Luke

I'd go to a haberdashery shop, if those still exist in your part of the world. Usually still about in older towns - sell knitting supplies, wool etc.

We have one here near the market hall and they sell fabric and stuff to make your own cushions, including foam.

Otherwise, search on eBay. I'm sure there'll be someone selling.

Good luck with that, rather you than me. But search for local upholsterers. There should be a one man band near you that works from his garage/shed, that's where I'd try. If they don't have the appropriate size then I'm sure they'd know where'd be best to source it

well i do like a challenge ahaa. i don't think there is anyone near me offering it, otherwise id generally know lol, otherwise i probably wouldn't bother attempting.

my friends mum is a seamstress and says she'll help me with the covers if im really stuck  :p

Fair enough. I just meant a normal upholsterer that does house furniture. That's who I used to do some alterations on my seat covers. Just for you to get foam off I mean, as I doubt they'd be able/want to redesign car interiors.

My wife used to make the foam inserts for car seats at Johnson Controls on Silloth. Alas they closed it down as part of their global restructuring :(

She use to trim a lot of the foam by hand using an angle grinder, and reckoned she could show most of the men their how to do it (it was a male dominated industry). They use to supply all the main car manufacturers.

I think she could still shape the foam for a full car if she needed to :)

Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but you can buy blocks of upholstery foam on ebay cut to size. You'll just need to trim/shape it.

This is just one of many listings

Or grab an old sofa front the side of the road somewhere if you don't mind it smelling of slash and cats.

Try ringing Bielawskis in Sheffield, they may help, excellent seat and interior upholsterers, did the alcantara seat bolster on SWMBO BMW 320d mSport, £40 all in, couldn't tell it from new!

Was in one of my least favourite shops today: Dunelm Mill. They stocked foam. Terrible shop though. Quite depressing!
