Idiots guide to Fabia stereo's Required

Featured Replies

Hi,

One of those how long is a piece of string questions.

I have just brought a 2001 Fabia Classic 1.9 TDI and the stereo is a little basic.

I am not a music mad person I just like a reasonable stereo that has reasonable features and gives a reasonable sound (Usually the factory fitted unit is fine). I do not want to start tearing out trim although I am happy to unscrew a cover and change a speaker or unplug a stereo and put another one in.

Any suggestions on a straight swap unit which has a CD player in it and any easy speaker changes?. Will another stereo from a another Skoda/VW model fit in etc.

Sorry for being so simple but I easily get confused when people start going on about outputs, head units, amps etc. Not interest really!!.

I'm thinking that I'll probably swap out the head unit on my new Fabia for something with an Aux In on the front panel and MP3 compatibility; if so then the original might be up for sale?

Headunit swaps:

You can fit any headunit (stereo) in place of the original one. Only thing you need to do is to swap the red and yellow wires (constant 12V and switched 12V) in order for the new HU to remember its settings. Pioneer and Sony have such option on the HU's wiring (don't know about other manufacturers).

Speaker swaps:

Rear - easy - remove originals, put new ones, connect them.

Front - not so easy - remove door trim, remove original speakers (midbass and tweeter), buy or make an adapter for the speaker, place new speaker(s), connect them, return door trim. Only thing you have to be careful is that the max. speaker depth is 65mm, otherwise you'll have to make a hole in the door trim :)

Front speakers - 16,5cm (6,5")

Rear speakers - 13cm (5") (???)

For changing the front speakers in the doors, I did a little write up, here

Although maybe the speaker setup for a 2001 classic is different
