2 out of 3 times when starting the car and switching the lights on, I get a bulb out warning which then dissappears after a few minutes of driving. It's always the N/S tail light (top bulb) I have removed it and cleaned up the contacts, but this doesn't appear to have helped.

 

Is this a sign of the bulb on it's way out or a possible intermittent wiring problem?

IIRC it's a signal that the bulb could be about to fail.

I think I read somewhere that it occurs as the filaments get older. Could be wrong though as usual :|

Yes. They give intermittent errors before finally giving up.

You were spot on. Had no warnings since changing the bulb.
