Fault code 778 and 2546 Steering Angle Sensor

Featured Replies

Right, first things first (obviously), this is how it began...

Removed the battery to undo the gearbox mount, engine mount, etc... to able me to manoeuvre engine to replace timing belt and water pump.

Upon doing that job, I replaced all mounts, put the battery back in and as far as I knew, job done!

However, when I started the car the Steering Wheel light came on the dash, showing fault as 778 Steering Angle Sensor.

Via VCDS I attempted to simply re-configure Basic Setting, and then also Steering Limit Stop as part of the procedure, now I have an extra fault, 2546 No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaption.

I have tried numerous times to re-config the Basic Setting and Steering Limit Stop, but to no avail! The fault codes also won't erase...

It's driving me insane and it can't be a faulty Steering Angle Sensor, all I done was the timing belt and water pump!

Can anyone shine any light on this problem and how the hell I resolve it?

Think I have figured the problem, though maybe not...

Prior to changing the timing belt and water pump it needed a rear right hub and wheel speed sensor (common) - but the timing belt was more important to me than having no ABS and ESP for the time.

Due to disconnecting the battery, it's reset everything, then because the ABS/ESP lights are on, the steering light came on and is unable to be re-configured via VCDS until the hub and sensor are replaced because it's somewhat connected via ESP/ABS...

This is what I believe, do we agree?

yes you will find they all go off when rear right hub is changed, seems strange mine was same side last month all same lights on all cleared when fixed.

If you are doing job yourself you will need a M18 spline tool for large bolt.

It's not the bolt I'm worried about, it's the pain of getting the bloody cap off, some of them can be right pains in the proverbial!

May be a daft thing to say, but has the car actually been driven since the battery has been disconnected.

I know that my dash lights up like a charismas tree until the car has been driven a few yards and then all the lights go off again...
