a few untaxing questions for a skoda noob

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, done a basic amount of searching for what im after but nothing too much on prefaces.

First off when you all say vcds i assume thats vagcom?

also, id like a nice set of oem looking drls, i have come across a thread saying there are one or two options available to use the existing lights as drls in vcds but its not defined if thats possible on the pre fl?

Secondly is retrofitting cruise control, it appears i dont have maxi dot, is it still possible? And/or is it easy enough to retrofit a maxidot display? I assume some coding in vcds will be required to change clocks or instruments.

and id like a good set of rear led clusters. As oem looking as possible again. Not started shopping yet but if anyone can point me in the right or steer me away from the wrong direction that would be a great and appreciated start.

The car is a 57' vrs pd170

thanks all

It used to be Vagcom....it was renamed and is now called VCDS.

VCDS allows a number of drl modes on pre fl cars, including North American and Swedish modes.

Cruise control is an easy retrofit, simply requiring a new indicator stalk and VCDS coding. You can retrofit Maxidot, but it is pricey unless you can find a second hand display. It also requires coding with VCDS.

Not sure what options there are in this regard. Skoda never fitted LED rear clusters to the Octavia, so you'll definitely be looking at an after market set up which will have to incorporate some sort of load resistor to stop you getting false blown bulb warnings on the dash.

most helpful already, i think i was confused on which cars had led reara. It looks like FL only. Thats fine.

it seems there are a good few versions of vcds so im going to be shopping next week for that.

cruise control is great news and i carried on digging around the forum and found ben @sharkperfermance is the man to speak about maxidot retrofit. I beleive my friends garage uses shark quite a bit and comes highly recomended so i will definitley need to speak to him soon

thanks much :)

I don't think LED rear clusters were ever fitted....even on FL models. The only Skoda I know that has them as standard is the Superb.....but even then it's only the L&K models that get them.

Shark are renowned for that sort of thing. Just for reference, a genuine replacement stalk for cruise costs about £85. It shouldn't take more than an hour to fit and code so £140 is probably a reasonable price including fitting.

thanks much :)

Any time

Before you try to fit CC you need to make sure your steering controller supports it. As you don't have maxidot you probably have a midline controller, not all of which support CC. A scan with VCDS will tell you the part number in order to find out.

OEM LED rear light clusters were fitted to the MkII Octavia, but only in China.

They are readily available on the internet and a number of members have fitted them (watch out for cheap copies).

They do however need resistors fitting to eliminate the blown bulb warning light.

For the non-OEM look try Dectane...

https://www.dectane.de/LITEC-Rueckleuchten/LITEC-SKODA/LITEC-SKODA-OCTAVIA/

These are plug and play.

There are a number of members who have fitted LED DRL's to their pre-facelift Octavia vRS's but they never look right (in my opinion). As the pre-FL never got DRL's they are easily identifiable as stuck-on / aftermarket jobbies which never looks good.

The other option as mentioned above are the factory installed DRL's that utilise the dipped headlights...

Scandinavian - Ignition on = dipped headlights, side lights, tail lights and number plates lights.

North American - Ignition on, handbrake off = dipped headlights only. Handbrake on - headlights off.

It is also possible to use VCDS to set the fog lights to perform the role of DRL's in either of the two settings listed above. You can also reduce the brightness by pre-set percentages and retrofit LED bulbs.

i think the latter sounds best to me, shopping for led fogs and see what settings best. Agreed with the aftermarket ones, they never look right then i assume there technically not right as they wont dim or turn off at the right time. Oem is best cheers

There is a list on the Ross Tech Wiki, I think it for the Golf, but it's applicable to the Octy too.

There are a few which the table says won't work but will depending on the version of the software it is running. Mine is like that. I would search on here too.
