  • I would get it hpi'd . Gum tree is so dodgy these days I would only buy off here or a decent trader

  • The leather seats have a number stamped in them - you can find a list of who owned it up too as long as they are/were a briskoda member at some point.

VrsMark - I was going to post it on the SE owner post that it was a Cat C - along with the registration plate to ensure people didn't enquire into it. Disappointed at the seller- lying to my face :/

Nathan - absolutely I thought there must be something up with it.. Too cheap to be as it was advertised as.

I will be browsing normal vRS's now I think. Just need some good seat covers...

lucky man,

thats why i would never buy off Gumtree, get pricks like that on there

... would you recommend any online sites that HPI check for cheap? Can only seem to find ones for £9 or more.

Sad that it was a Cat C, but a CAT C can equally be a stolen/recovered vehicle, a full HPI check would have told you why it was a write off, also £9 is a very small price to pay to know if the several thousand pounds you were potentially handing over is money well spent.

My moto for people selling on Guntree is 'if their lips are moving.....their lying'.

Even if it was written off recently I'd be surprised damaged from being stolen was more than the value of the car to make it cat c

A lot depends on who looks at it and what was done, I know an MX5 owner who got it for a song because it's former owner had been unfaithful and his wife, as his three passions were supposed to be her, his car and golf she combined them and she took each of his golf clubs to a different panel/glass. Insurance co. wrote it off, but obviously it didn't take much to get it back on the road.

Also stolen/recovered after payout automatically goes down as a cat D.

Hahaha! Well fair enough, I suppose your motto was proven for me this time.

Viewing another one on Sunday, SE - #337 - 80'000 on the clock- asking price of £5500 , cambelt changed at 63k, FSH, so, I'll go and see that one and see what it is saying, I'll let you know how it goes.

I didn't know it could of been stolen, is that included in a Cat C then?

It was the fact that I asked him "is it Cat D, have you had a bump or a crash in it?" and he replied "No no no it's clean" - it just disappoints me really.

Bought 5 checks with the AA for £29 as Oli3000 suggested. Money well spent that is for sure!

I know what you're saying Matt1chelski - It would have to of been a lot of damage (that was obviously well repaired and hidden) to Cat C a £5000-£6000 car :/

A lot depends on who looks at it and what was done, I know an MX5 owner who got it for a song because it's former owner had been unfaithful and his wife, as his three passions were supposed to be her, his car and golf she combined them and she took each of his golf clubs to a different panel/glass. I bet he regretted that affair..

Well, I wasn't happy with that dishonesty of the seller and despite it not showing any signs of being Cat C - that's what it was on the HPI , I didn't want any trouble getting insurance (I'm only 21 , coming up four years no claims this July) and then I thought there could be problems selling the car on in the future.

So me and the father went down to see this vRS SE today,

Looked reasonably clean at first glance, but 'on closer inspection'...

Front offside fog light out (nothing serious) a bit of condensation in the offside headlight (again nothing serious), lifted the bonnet and everything seemed tickety boo until my dad noticed one of the panel seams was apart slightly (again on the offside). Had a test drive, pulled like a raging bull, well impressed, all seemed well, no pulling, no shaking at speed etc.

Asked the seller 'any bumps? Is it cat D?'

Seller replied: "no no no no bumps it's clean'

Got home and hpi'd it -- 'INSURANCE CLASSIFY AS TOTAL LOSS CAT C'

* ooooo , that was a close call *

Just a couple of things.

1) Why didn't you HPI it before you viewed?

2) The current owner may know nothing of the damage if it happened before they got the car and they did no HPI check. I know this seems unlikely, but unlikely as it may be, it is still a possiblilty.

Also this may help you regarding pricing. I got my SE 2 years ago on 52k. I paid £7,495 for it. Full service history with all paperwork and receipts. Including the most recent one where it had the water pump, belt, coolant and service done at the dealer, costing around £800 iirc (without me digging for the papers)

Re HPi check beforehand: A mechanic friend had hpi'd it for me but forgot to get the print out at the end of the day! So I jumped in both feet first and viewed it, it wasn't that far of a drive anyway I didn't mind, I have learnt my lesson now that's for sure.

The hpi check showed the crash at the end of last year when the seller owned it, but yes I agree with what you were saying could of been a possibility.

I knew from the beginning it was very cheap, hence my caution. Is that what the service was for belt, pump, coolant etc? Essential though I suppose. Viewing one on Sunday with 80k on the clock for £5.5k which sounds more realistic (and yes I have hpi checked it already ;) )

Deposit down on the SE I viewed on Sunday, all being well I should be picking her up on Friday. Drove well, a couple of cosmetic faults but it was reflected in the price.

Time to strip the sub and amp out of the old car and start looking at double dim head units !

Thank you all for your advice and interest.

Good luck with that :D

Joking aside fabia's are a solid not so little car and if looked after tend to keep going, minor cosmetic stuff can usually be sorted with a decent bodyshop or parts from a scrapped car if it's interior trim or a bumper etc.

Have you had bad experiences of finding replacement head units?

I have read through a few guides to taking the stereo out and it didn't seem too difficult? Although easier said/read than done. So I am told, hence my decision to buy one!

The number one fault to fix is the middle heater vent being constantly closed, and the dial not opening the 'flaps'... I will have a search for a solution once I get some time. A haynes manual may be needed!

I was joking about the double dihead unit rather than double din, you'll have no problem fitting a double din HU in a Fabia, but do consider arial amplification as most after market HU's lack it so you end up with a crap signal.

Ahhhh my typing mistake, not the easiest trying to type with muddy hands in the rain (I'm a gardener) on an old iPhone 3 !

Took me the best part of two and a half hours to strip the wiring kit from the ol' 206 this afternoon... what a faff.

*Aerial* amplification do you mean ;)

I shall have a look into it, maybe a 'fin' rather than the current aerial replacement perhaps too.

Thank you very much for the advice

Looking forward to joining the Skoda family and being able to relate properly to everyone here on Briskoda too.

Yep that too :p Stock HU has amplification built in, when you swap over to an after market HU you'll normally find reception is lacking as soon as you get further away from the transmitter.

I need to sort my radio signal out because its RUBBISH haha. The middle vent is easy enough to fix. I bet all thats happend is its come off the little things on the side.

I have read about it being possible to simply 'pop' the section out using a knife or similar? No sure how much truth there is behind it though!

I will get a Haynes manaul and see what that has to say first of all I think. I will let you know what I find.

Haha sorry pal I beat you to it (Y)

Good luck finding another, just don't buy the one for sale in Oldham (a vRS SE with 50k on the clock for £4500 or there a bouts) it has been a Cat C, repaired granted, but still not worth the risk in my opinion.

JRJG

No thanks buddy. I was reading this thread and thought that car looks familiar! Good job I didn't go and look at it would have been a wasted journey

The one In oldham sold a while ago for a lot less than that, just hasn't removed the add.

Was cat D I believe also.

Use a card from your wallet. Theres 4 clips, 1 in each corner. Dont forget that once you've got it out a bit you need to disconnect the hazard switch. Mine came off the little runner things on the side. Took all of 2 mins to fix, that included removing the vents.

Anyone know what's happening with number 91?

Anyone own it on here?

Gets listed every other day for a few hours then removed, price is £2,700 which shouts scam at you.
