Daytime Running Lights

Featured Replies

Hi - I'm the new owner of a 2014 Skoda Fabia SE, I have read somewhere that daytime running lights are compulsory on cars after 2013. I have read the manual which gives you two ways of activating these lights. the first is a switch in the fuse box - I have checked   NO SWITCH, the other is to manipulate the turn lever and on off switch - NO Effect. Unless it uses the existing lights I can find no lights (Led normal or other). I would be grateful if a knowledgable person out there could put me straight, does the car have them?

I also have a towbar factory fitted and would be grateful if somebody could tell me where the fuse is for the 12v supply to the 13 pin plug is.

regards

Harry

AIUI the capability must be there. They do not have to be activated. Are your sidelights plain 5W bulbs or 21/5W?

SE Spec doesn't have fog lights (unless added as an optional extra upon build), this is where the DRLs would be located.

I believe you should just have blanking plates there to match the middle lower grille? If so, no DRLs.

Also, DRLs are only compulsory on new models as of 2013(or whenever it was). Fabia 2 was launched in 2007 and facelifted in 2010, Skoda just decided that some people could have DRLs and some are fine without!

As the above post really...The se doesnt have them. Iv looked into it before for mine, i think you get them if you spec fogs, as theyre in the same unit.

I think theyre only compulsory on new models after 2013. The current fabia model is 2007 and facelifted on 2010. So i dont think it needs them.

According to the AA:

European legislation adopted in 2008 required dedicated daytime running lights (DRL) to be fitted to all new 'types' of passenger cars and small delivery vans since February 2011.

This does not mean that every new car first registered after February 2011 will have DRL fitted. The requirement only applies to models that go through the European whole vehicle type approval process after that date i.e. new or substantially facelifted models.

I believe that there has been a requirement for years for cars to have at least one REAR fog light. The Germans insist that there is only one rear fog light, in order to prevent confusion with the brake lights (of which there are frequently three now).  I am not aware of any legal requirement to have front fog lights.

ps - the Fabia vRS has a pair of searchlights disguised as DRLs ;)

There is no legal requirement for front fogs. Its an optional extra.

There is however a legal amount of visibility in which your allowed to turn the fogs on, however i cant remember what it is lol.

Many people love drl's, and many hate. Its a personal preference, I'm not too fussed. If its bad visibility I'll turn my headlights on, like most people have done for years.

On the bike though, I'll have the headlights on all the time.

Some years ago (quite a few actually), while riding my bike, I was pulled over by a traffic cop and told not to have my headlights on during the day. I was also told to remove a Day-Glo bib that had the legend "Honda Freedom Rider" on it.

It must have been a bad (perhaps celibate) day ;)

I love my DRLs, I think they compliment the front of the car. However what I hate is that if I want to light up my instrument cluster (IMHO it looks 10x better lit up in white than as when not lit), I have to lose my lovely LED daytime lights in favor of the currently horrible halogen projectors.

Can't decide whether to get good Osrams or go all-out HID for not much extra.

Haha really? Wow.

Completely opposite to how it is now then. Mess it 2005 that they started making bikes with permanently on dipped beam?

Some people dont like that either, but if it stops a car from pulling out on me (again) its worth while for me haha

I can't count the number of times I have had a car driver say to me "Sorry mate, never saw you". almost as if he expected me to say, "Entirely my fault, I should have texted you to say I would be here".

Nobody should EVER be allowed to drive a car unless they have ridden a bike on the road for at least 365 days; summer, winter, rain, snow, ice, day & night ;)

Daytime running lights are designed to come on automatically when the engine is started - all other lights should remain off.

Note: This does not mean that every new car first registered after February 2011 will have DRL fitted. The requirement only applies to models that go through the European whole vehicle type approval process after that date i.e. new or substantially facelifted models.

Agreed!

2 years ago i had a ford ranger wait until i got closer, then turned right infront of me. I put the brakes on, but i hit the pick up.

As i was on the floor in the middle of the road, i looked up and heard the wheels spinning and engine revving. So i quickly got the first part of his reg.

The police came, thrn sent a few units around to his house. To which he answered the door and said "sorry, i didnt realise id hit anybody"

All he got for that was 8 points. Still pee's me off thinkin about it. haha.

I did get a new bike though, bonus lol
