MFD1 satnav - TV, reverse camera etc?

Featured Replies

Still have a oem Skoda satnav MFD1 unit from my previous vrs. Plan on putting it in a vrs se, when I find one!

Anyway, they come with loads of plugs etc for different things, has anyone seen and tested what they are capable of?

I'm thinking of getting a reverse camera, TV, USB, iPhone adaptor/charger, that type of stuff.

Not even sure what's possible :/

I ordered my mk4 R32 golf with the MFD1 satnav (double din colour screen),  which I think is exactly the same thing as the Skoda's one, albiet with diff colours for the back lighting.

It's pretty basic in terms of functionality.

There is an AUX port in the back (uses a very unique multipin plug) which u need to buy an aftermarket box (Dietz 1212 is one such box,  which I used to use in my car with a ps2 slim)   to allow you to hook up external video devices such as

DVD player, TV tuner,  camera.

If u wanted to run a reverse camera to this AUX port,  then yes u can do this,  but the headunit won't select AUX channel automatically.  you'd have to select it yourself,  which defeats the point.

Think of AUX as one of the source's on the headunit,   eg Radio/CD/AUX,   and u get the idea better.

Bearing in mind there's only ONE AUX port,  you are limited to practically ONE video input,  so you'll need to make the choice between what you want hooking up to your MFD1.

There are various digital TV tuners to buy on ebay now, which u could hook up to the MFD1 via an Aux box like the dietz1212 I mentioned.

But the other downside to the MFD is the actual picture quality is really poor as in reality the design dates back to 2001/2.     There's absolutely no colour adjustment available,   I think it's just brightness, not even contrast either.

So all in all,   although the MFD looks nice for an OEM unit, and sounds pretty punchy (for an OEM unit),  its very very lacking in anything nowadays.

ps

The maps are out dated,   and CDrom based, so look very plain too.

And the front CD slot is purely for the satnav to run off,   it can't play CDs.   you must either connect an OEM CD changer to this,   or an aftermarket mp3 box like a connects2 box of magic.

Thank you very much for that detailed reply, answerd all of my questions in one answer!

Perfect!

Do you have an eBay link to any of the unique aux in ports?

Dietz 1212 - this isn't for sale (I've sold it many years ago) it's just the only picture I have left of this.  It gives u an idea of what the port looks like

This is what I used to have in my car to replace the CD changer - it plugged in place of the CD changer mini Iso on the headunit, to allow ipod to connect and be controlled off the headunit.

Sadly I can't find a picture of the back of the headunit to show u all the connections,    but there's only ONE AUX input, and it uses that weird round junction,  that is what u find on the picture of the Dietz1212

Anyways,  the Dietz1212 is probably 10years old now.   There maybe others on the market, but u'll need to do some research as this headunit is so old now,  but it's a common bit of kit across VAG for the mk4 Golf period of time.

It was also optional in Sharons (I believe),   Transporters,   Passats (they also had the optional TMC traffic alert and TV tuner (alas useless now as we don't have analogue TV signals anymore...))

So finding info you can broaden your search criterea

Ah yes, I know that plug but wasn't 100% sure it was for aux. I can get a basic audio plug for my iPhone or MP3 player etc to match up to that... but none for video.

Unsure what the blue wire will be for if only using an iPod etc.

The extra wire will be for power or earth,   cant remember which now.

If u look at my Dietz1212 photo u will notice it has an extra wire too

Dietz1212 will give u video input,   but u might need to search around for one.   So old now!

Ebay.de is probably a better place to find this sort of stuff,  I posted a link about which should point you in the right direction.

Other than the Dietz1212 there should be other manufacturers that make a video input for these old headunits

I still have that Dension Icelink cable in my house somewhere,   if you have an Ipod Mini generation1  (realy old ipod) then it'll work with MFD1 (and also VW gamma cassette headunit).

I'm going to have a 6cd changer on mine so that slot will be used up for me, would rather keep that and use the aux input for audio since it's only £20.

Don't fancy paying £80'ish for video just yet but a possibility In the future maybe!

I did think about that but I'm not too bothered about using CDs. Plus just the normal AUX cable will not charge my iPod. Will be ideal to just leave it in the car tbh.
