Cotton Tee for buffing

I recall being told long ago that an old, well washed cotton tee shirt was the ideal material for buffing a freshly polished/waxed car.

Would this advise still hold true, or have microfibre cloths consigned cotton to the dark ages?

...prompted by some wardrobe decluttering that might mean a trip to the clothing skip.
