Changing front coil spring

Featured Replies

Hello all, heard a lovely clunk this morning, and my drivers coil spring has snapped

Just wondering two things

1 - where's best to buy them, for cheapness but still keeping a decent quality

2- anything else I should change while I'm at it?

Many thanks

Jason.

Yeah, it's happened to the best of us!

1) My opinions (after trying a few different brands of springs) is that, pound for pound and taking longevity and the car's ride quality into consideration, you can't beat stock springs from a Main Dealer! They're not that expensive...

2) Yes, you should change the spring on the other side at the same time!!! Always.

How expensive is not that expensive? Haha.

Yeah was going to do that anyways

Typical timing as I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks this weekend so will have to take the mondeo st to the airport :(

Just for you, I've dug out an old invoice to have a look!

They're about 60 quid each from a main dealer (including vat).

Not too bad - and as I said, I've tried different shocks and springs over the years, and if you care about how your car drives, the stock springs are the best. Aftermarket stuff just does not work the same - although if you want a harder and more crashy ride, then by all means buy something else. Especially if you're not replacing the shock absorbers at the same time. If the shocks are a little tired, then new aftermarket springs will probably give them such a hard time, your car will be all springy and bouncy! :)

If you're handy with the spanners and have a set of coil spring compressors (or can borrow some) then it's an easy job to do on your driveway.

And you have a Mondeo ST as well? Bloody hell, this man must be rich, haha!

I like those Mondeo ST's - I reckon they're pretty good and a bit under-rated. How do you find it?

It's alright but just not as fun to drive, great economy, and better for long distances, but even after a remap it's not as fun haha

It was mine... Got married and the wife never let's me drive it now! :)

It's bloody bumpy now so probably will look into changing springs and shocks to be honest, changed springs on my old transporter before, hate doing it mind, always afraid the clamps will ping off haha.

Haha lol, ah well, Skoda wins again over Ford eh?!

Yeah probably worth looking at dampers as well as you say.

One of my front coil springs broke at about 90,000 miles. That was when I decided to refresh the suspension, and spent a lot of time and money trying various Eibach and Bilstein options of shocks and springs. None of them gave me the mixture of comfort and sportiness that the original setup ever did. Yeah I like the car to be a bit sporty - but on the 90% of other occasions when I am just using as - you know - a CAR...I want it to be compliant, comfortable, and free from bounciness and crashiness!

I ended up sending all the other stuff back to the aftermarket suppliers, and going to my man dealer, and asking for a deal on a new set of shocks and springs all round. Cost me about 400 quid in total for the lot - stock springs and stock Sachs dampers.

Fitted them all, and the car was perfectly lovely jubbly!

Many thanks I think I will ring my local (1hour away) dealer tomorrow :)

Had coilovers, uprated springs ect in the past and agree with you, standard is sporty enough for a car that gets driven normally 99% of the time.

Just as a matter of curiosity, did you manage to get new springs from the main dealer? I had a broken rear spring at the last MOT (only a small amount at the bottom) and so had to replace it. Phoned a local Skoda dealer and they said they'd stopped making them! They said they only had one in Germany, which would take a few days to arrive and I would probably be better off getting an aftermarket part.

Ended up getting a couple of K-line rear springs that feel ok, but it's encouraged me to shop for decent coilovers or lowering springs given that I don't know how long they will last and I'll need to keep an eye on the fronts.

Oh dear! Well as I said - I did buy OE springs from my main dealer - but to be fair, it was 2 years ago now...

I've gone for Sachs ones in the end up but I've let the garage source them so unsure where they're from. Ended up being £52 each so not too bad.

2am post = off to turkey for 2 weeks today :) wahoo :)
