Off centre steering wheel

Featured Replies

Put 4 new tyres on a few weeks ago and have noticed that in order to go straight (on a flat road) I need to have the wheel turned slightly to the left such that I can see most of the indicator stalk but none of the lights stalk. Other than that, the car feels fine. Old tyres had even wear too.

Presumably just needs tracking?

Yes most likely, best to start with a four wheel alignment and hopefully this will sort it.

the car's in for it's 18,000 mile service next week, is this something they'd check/fix as part of the service or is it really for me to maintian as part of general wear and tear?

cheers.

I'd mention it to them specifically as they normally just check the condition of tyres.

Steering geometry adjustments are excluded from the Skoda New Car Warranty as detailed below.

Mechanical adjustments after six months or 6,500 miles are also excluded from warranty cover such as:

> Adjustments to doors, flaps, boot lids, bonnets, sunroof

> Brake adjustment

> Clutch adjustment

> V belt adjustment

> Ignition adjustment

> Headlight adjustment

> Steering geometry adjustments

> Wheel balancing

I would get the problem sorted by going to a reputable garage which does full 4 wheel alignment using a Hunter alignment rig or equivalent.

cheers Dennis,

did think that this would be the case.

I've got this problem. Tracking is straight, or so I'm told.

I noticed more brake dust on the left front than the right front, so maybe a sticky calliper?

My car also has a slightly off centre wheel. No tyre wear or vibrations though.

I'm going to take it to a place over near Leeds that gets very good ratings that does full 4 wheel alignment.

Phil

I had wheel off centre, and had my alignment checked. It was slightly off, and the wheel is now straight. There was minor edge wear on the tyres, but no real difference to the rears.

My off centre problem got fixed. On a previous service the steering wheel was removed. Despite my protestations they claimed they couldn't have put it back on misaligned.

When I collected it the other week, I was told they had realigned the steering wheel..... :wall:

Glad it's sorted though.

Mine has been developed the same issue despite wheel alignment carried out. First service next week so we'll see what they say

I've noticed since getting the car the other week that my steering wheel is very slightly off centre and i also get a slight vibration at around 70mph or above. I'm going to make sure the front wheels are balanced ok and then if need be i'll have a trip to the place in Leeds mentioned previously.

Dave.

The vibration sounds like balancing.  I had to get the steering wheel realigned last week as it was slightly off since I got the car new a few months ago.  It has made a difference since.

Called in at my local little tyre place this afternoon. On the front is an old Goodyear Eagle F1 and a new Kumho KU39 (put on by the dealer before i collected the car). They checked both of them finding the Goodyear was balanced fine but found the dealer had balanced the new tyre incorrectly and also found that the Goodyear was worn around the inner edge so looks like it does need a full allignment anyway.

Anyhow now they have rebalanced the new tyre the slight vibration has gone so once i get back off holiday i'll look at getting a matching Kumho to replace the old Goodyear and then once that's done get the steering wheel / alignment / tracking sorted.

I didn't think you were supposed to put different tyres / tread patterns on the same axle?
