There are various cables available to plug into the port.

 

I do not have an Apple phone but do have various iPods for which I will require the 000-051-446-C cable.

 

There is also a MDI/USB cable. Can I attach a Sandisk Card reader (Imagemate12 in 1) to it.

Not sure about card readers due to the power draw they may need. However some USB HD's work so it may work.

USB memory sticks work well and are the recommended way of upgrading the MDI firmware if needed.

There is also a micro-USB cable available but I've not seen anything definitive on whether these work with phones/media players though.
