Top mounts-polybush vs polo vs audi 80

Featured Replies

Just wondering what peoples experiences are on the vrs -10mm top mount situation.

I've read a few guides and write ups that people have put up on here and other forums, but I'm interested in how octy owners have got on with upgrading their top mounts.

I'm going to be fitting spax coilovers so I appreciate that it won't be as plush as OE but I would like to keep the ride as daily comfortable as possible.

I plan to do the polo top cup/vrs trimmed cup as shown in the great write up bowders1 has produced and I hoped to utilise either polo top mounts, polybush or audi 80 mounts to drop it 10mm further, giving the front shocks an extra 10mm breathing space (I'm aiming for standard spiders to be at wheel arch height-ish).

Any advice/findings/experiences would be gratefully received!

I messed about with this last year. I just had lowering springs on mine. I fitted the red polybush ones first but wasn't really happy with them as they made some funny noises. I didn't actually grease them when I should have but a few posted up they had fitted them and after a few months they were noisy. I eventually went with the polo mounts. The car was spot on tbh and got a 15mm drop. I also used them with the modified top plate. The only issues were a little scrubbing on full lock on the arch liner and the bottom of the bumper used to catch on speed bumps.

Thanks matey, I read through this thread a couple of weeks back and learnt a lot from it. Have you stayed with the polo mounts?and with going from standard to polybush was there a noticeable difference in harshness to the ride, then similarly, was the ride any less harsh going to the polo Bush?

Cheers.

Went back to standard set up in the end including back to standard springs. I wasn't really happy with the springs the ride was too bouncy using standard shocks. But I went with lowering springs with standard top mount but it was too high at the front. Then polybush mount but had issues. Ride was a little bit harsher as you would expect but still acceptable. Then I fitted polo mounts got the 15mm drop and the ride was very similar to the polybush mounts. I did read about issues of the polo mounts coming through the turret but I'm sure that was due to incorrect fitting because I did notice they don't go in straight like the standard ones. I made sure to slap loads of grease on the mount and in the turret and they went in fine. At the time I took them out they were still mounted fine and looked OK.

Im also interested as I too will be upgrading next month along with new coilovers. Just to let u know if u go spax u will have to buy them for a lcr as the octavia ones are not for vrs models.

I don't have a VRS but I fitted Koni Sport with matched -35mm springs. The ride is firm (2 turns out of 6) but not overly hard.

I re-fitted strut top bushings and ****ed them up because they were loose.

Then I fitted Audi 80 top bushings. These are basically a metal core with a rubber outside. I know...I cut one in half. These were REALLY hard, they crash bad and make the rear end (I don't know why) ride like absolute ****. They also drop the car another 15mm, my front bumper was grinding like a cheap stripper on anything that wasn't completely flat.

I've just refitted new standard top mounts and the ride is a lot better, it's still firm but speed bumps etc are not horrifically uncomfortable! I can also go over moderate inclines without scaring pedestrians.

I would like to fit the Leon Cupra hardened top mount bushings, they are the same size and shape but a harder durometer. Unfortunately they are just too expensive for me right now.

Did you try tps for the top mounts? So how much uprated are the lcr ones over standard vrs ones?

Do the LCR ones lower the car an extra 10mm? Or same as vrs?

Thanks for the input mate, that rules the audi 80 ones out then! I deffo don't want too harsh but I'm after the extra drop to adjust the coilovers to suit to give the extra shock stroke.

What are the powerflex topmounts like?

TPS are still dear and not much discount on those LCR top mounts. They are 3 times the cost of std OEM vrs ones. They are approx 20 stiffer though

I have a spare set though used for a short period before I went to poly bush mounts. Pm me.

No same as vrs

If you read my install thread buddy I think I stated the poly bush ones work very well. In fact I have had no issues since fitting them and greasing them up. They sit well into the turret and my modified vrs cups ( cut to act as a washer) with polo cups. The real benefit is they provide 10mm more shock travel which is really needed when going low on coilovers and a absolute must. They have helped reduce strut noise too.

Stiffer than OEM but dear. And they do not lower the car.

Cheers for that, yeah I had a good read through it and I will deffo be doing the modified cups but unsure on using the polo mounts or poly Bush yo get the extra shock stroke. I read on your thread about the cast wishbone Bush thread that you +1 someone's comment about poly Bush Top mounts making the ride harsh. I really do appreciate the input mate.

I think it's going to be a case of trial and error on my car and see what works best, I guess I could sell on the ones I don't use.

Does anyone have experience of the polo Bush being harsher or the same as the standard Bush?

Pmd

I swapped from standard to poly and noticed a little difference in ride but not a massive amount tbh. Both on lowering springs perfectly acceptable not uncomfy at all. Then fitted the polo mounts and these were very similar to the poly mounts.

But obvious to say this but the standard Octavia mounts were more comfortable than both.

Hi, do you perhaps know the part number? Because if I aks a dealer they will always ask for a license plate in order to help... :-(  It is just the top mount bush right? I need new top bearings anyway. Could do the cups as well...

Edit: sorry, found it already!
