Lazy wipers

Featured Replies

Soo it looks like the wipers got lazy...they barely move in one direction and then they go even slower on the way back to the bottom with small "bouncing/quick stops". I managed to find the cure but since me and mechanics aren't the best pals could anyone slap a scan/image on how to get to the wiper linkage. Never tried taking the plastic at the windscreen off and i would not want to break something.

were they made in the UK? ;)

I have done this repair on my Golf, the wipers were still moving, just a bit slow, it was easy enough. However I did the same job on a Bora, they were really slow, I managed to damage the mechanism.

I would recommend buying the mechanism from a scrap yard minus the motor and refurbing it, give it a good clean and grease etc, then just do a swap over.

On my first octavia the linkage came apart pretty easy and i was able to grease it up and it was fine. On my current octavia i ended up having to replace the whole lot because it was forked.

Yep sound like typical UK workers. Lol.

Seriously pop then off, pull them apart and lubricate them all up. Don't do what I did and hit the thread to get them apart... you end up needing a new mechanism!

Pull the scuttle panel off... then follow your nose. It's easy when you have done it once.

I have done this twice on mine now:

In brief:

Wiper arms off

Scuttle off

Disconnect loom

3 torx screws

twist/roll linkage out

Remove circlip on each spindle end

Ease spindle out (some people need to remove the motor, so mark positions)

Sand off any rust/corrosion from the spindle

Clean out the bushes

Repack with grease

Reassemble

Do not remove the motor...you will change the action. I couldn't get mine back in the same place and had to use a new linkage setup.

When you are taking apart the spindles to clean them you'll notice there are 3 washers IIRC. 2 thin ones and 1 thick one. Remove one of the thin ones. This made the biggest improvement to my wipers. Much more than cleaning and greasing.

fwiw, I have removed my motor and not had any issues with the movement going wrong, but maybe I was lucky :-)

Cheers for the info guys. Will do it over the weekend, done a quick fix for now with some WD40 soaking and after a few hours i took some grease in a spray can from the companys workshop and soaked it in that. Works like a charm now in case the rain decides to come...should live till i get the time during the weekend. :)

Mbames, perhaps I'm overreacting a bit....well I definitely am!

I don't see any reason to remove the motor though, it makes removal/refitting slightly easier perhaps, but thats about it.

When mine on my vrs went wrong i got a replacement motor and linkages from a golf but it had a different motor i had to swap over the motors. Not had no problems

I found that if I removed the motor it was easier to get the spindles to come complete out, otherwise I had to some "encouragement".  I think the point is - if the motot is removed, make sure that everything is marked up so it can be set back upon reassembly.

Take a picture before dissasembling as well, I don't know if it makes a difference which linkage is on top and which is on bottom.
