Disappearing Facebook friends, still friends & not blocked?

Featured Replies

Question I was asked by a family member and have no idea about.

Basically they have friends which periodically disappear. If you go to a known friend it shows you have a mutual friend but the friend is not listed in the account as a friend and is unsearchable on Facebook from any account.

Yet the friend will reappear to give an important life update (ie marriage) then vanish again. Even private messages vanish until they resurface.

I've had a look for family member who's only contact point was Facebook as they're trying to invite them to a wedding. The only mutual friend can only be messaged by friends and has a blank profile for non friends.

How on earth can someone go stealth like this?

Possibly their settings not your family members. their friends can opt to be hidden but allow certain messages to be more widely seen.

I've checked my settings and I can see to hide parts of a profile but not go completely stealth.

I'd thought blocking, but that automatically unfriends so that's not the reason.

I dont know the "How", but I have an idea about the "Why".

We have had problems with staff discussing work with friends, family and PARENTS on FB, this is completely against the Data Protection Act, Child Prtection Act and several other acts.

After repeated warnings were ignored, we added a clause to the contracts stating they were not allowed to have the parents as friends on FB, or discuss work matters, and that if breached, it would be considered "Gross Misconduct".

We have 2 members of staff who are suspected of doing as above - somehow hiding themselves, but still able to read/post messages to the people they are no longer supposed to be in contact with.

(If you find out how they are doing it, please let me know so we can expose and sack them).

I know a teaching friend of swmbo cannot be searched for unless you are a friend or friend of her existing friends as we couldn't find how to send a friend request.

Once she friended a common friend her profile became visible to swmbo which is how I've set SWMBOs account (via privacy settings).

But that way of being invisible only works if you're not friends.

I've set up a test account but it has me stumped.

GG simple as then using their mobiles? I've also seen workers tether their workstation to a personal phone via usb to bypass work filtering.

It isnt a work based filter, they dont use computers* much, it is gossiping about children in their care outside of work hours; there have been a number of incidents where protected information has been posted, including the names of children under protection orders etc.

I have been pushing the boss to approach FB about the 2 employees accounts, but so far no luck.

* Heck, most of them dont even know how to run Windows Media Player!!!!

FB wouldn't help you if you asked for data protection reasons.

I have friends on Facebook that disappear as though I've removed them as friends and then it makes an awkward conversation as to why I've deleted them when I know nothing about it!

Strange

FB wouldn't help you if you asked for data protection reasons.

I have been told otherwise, but I havent really looked into it.
