Which tow bar to chose?

Featured Replies

My new company car (VRS estate tdi) will be delivered soon and I've asked about tow bar options. I've spec the tow bar prep but I have to get the dealer to fit. I've got the below options and I'm after fellow briskodian feedback. I've got trailers, caravan and horse box which all have 7 pin

Single fixed

Single detachable

Single detachable 13pin

Twin fixed

Twin detachable

Twin detachable 13pin

I had the same issue.  Calling round various towbar suppliers and fitters produced quotes that varied from £400 'then you get a Skoda dealer to recode the car' to £600 including coding.  I ended up at Spirit Skoda in Harlow who did the job with OEM parts (detachable swan neck with 13pin twin electrics and coding) in 3 hours for £457.  I did have the factory towbar preparation fitted and was told that saved an hour's time and cost as well as the cost of a wiring loom.

As it's a company car I got to keep the steel frame that gets replaced by the towbar so I can take the towbar off at the end of the lease.

13 to 7 pin (single and double) are available from the dealer or your friendly online auction for less then £20

I had towbar prep and towbar was fitted by the dealer before I collected the car for £430, towbar is a Westfalia removable swan neck with 13 pin electrics, I have an adapter so I can borrow my brothers trailer, and will convert my trailer when I get around to it..

If you have a caravan then my advice is go for detachable twin 13-pin. This will give you the ability to run the fridge and charge the battery while towing. I'm not sure twin 7-pin is an option on detachable as the socket needs to fold away. You can then get a 13-pin to twin 7-pin adapter cable for caravan if it's not 13-pin already.

For small trailer, horse box or lighting board on a cycle carrier an adapter plug is about £5.

One thing I was told recently is NOT to get towbar prep for a VRS. Don't know why. I'm having the complete kit fitted by my dealer and paid by Skoda as compensation for the wait.

I can get serviced at 2 dealers so I thought I could try and strike a deal with them. They have my servicing for 4yrs and they do me a good deal on the tow bar. I do 140k miles in 4 yrs so they'll do well out of the servicing
