My visit to ChrisRS and the reluctant detailer's first shopping list

Featured Replies

Hi All

I visited Chris up in Bingley recently, and if you have seen the write up in his thread you'll know I was suitably impressed with the results.  So thanks again Chris and I'll add a link to that post shortly.

Chris gave me the bones of a shoping list as I was a little short on time, hopefully you can help me firm this up into a couple of orders (so I can clean my car before the local eastern european car wash joint starts to get tempting)

Just to point out I see this as a maintenance routine rather than a hobby, so dont want to spend a fortune and definitely wont be collecting exotic products just to give them a try.  Also the easy and speed of routine done is important to me as I dont have a great deal of spare time, (or expertise for that matter lol)

So onto the list....

Autobrite HD lance (soon to be on order, could do with a recommend on which pack to go for, there seem to be a few on the dw group buy page, assuming that is still valid)

Snow foam - which one?

From halfords on the 3 for 2 and 10% comes to a total of £29.67  (list below), could I do better elsewhere or with other products?

Also need recomends on where (or where and why to get the following)

Sonax BSD (recommended)

Sealant (cg jetseal as a later purchase)

Drying towel - was tempted to just use drying cloths as i dont have any where to dry and store a big towel cleanly.  Is this a terrible idea?

2nd bucket (with gritguard)

Will the BSD be used in the drying process or are other products better suited?

thanks for any help or advice :)

Just one quick bit of advice - if you are shopping at Halford's..... you should sign-up on Quidco for added savings.

Cashback scheme in place... In-store purchases when you Dredit/debit card is registered with your Quidco account.

So as well as 3 for 2 offers, get an additional 2.5% cashback

If get a drying cloth from asda. £3 iirc and not to bad. I have 5-6 of then. Obviously there's better out there but as far as budget goes they are damn good for the price!!

I wouldn't bother with the demon shine rapid dirt shifter either if using a snow foam. As for snow foam, I use AB Magifoam and I love the stuff.

I'd have to add another item circa 10 pounds as not to waste the 3 for 2, any recommendations?

This one:  http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=196592  &   Their offer of snowfoam to go with it

Forget the Demonshine RDS.....Just get some Household All Purpose cleaner and a spray bottle

Some further recommendations above

BTW Simon...You wont need a QD drying aid unless you live in a hard water area..I don't think you do.

Just use the BSD after every 3 washes to top up your LSP

Cheers Chris, Anything else worth getting from Halford for a tenner on the 3 4 2?

Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo is 1000x better than TripleWax shampoo

The water map shows most of the north west as slightly hard to moderately hard, so should be ok then?

Hard means water spotting. Due to high mineral content

Yeah i had a look on a water hardness map, I'm in the medium bit so I'll wash it and see what happens.

Just  a quick one on the ab foam, they appear to do a few different foams, (snowfoam, magifoam, and super snow foam) Is magifoam the one to go for?

thanks for the tip, unfortantly did not have time to sign up on my lunch (to take advantage of the 10% flash sale)

Magifoam is the best but also needs diluting a little more

If you use just under an inch to 1 litre of water, that will be fine..More foam does not mean more clean

Could I recommend getting the Halfords sheepskin mitt?

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/cleaning-products/chamois-leather-car-sponges-cleaning-cloths/halfords-genuine-sheepskin-mitt

And then some G3 body prep shampoo to strip the old protection before claying and to lube the clay mitt:

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/cleaning-products/detailing-products/farecla-g3-body-prep-shampoo-500ml

You could, but I already picked up the halfords part of the order after work :D .  I went for a MF mitt as I'd heard a lambs wool one may rot if not kept perfectly.

A product to strip protection will be on my list in a little while, its been clayed and had jetseal applied very recently.  Only really got the clay mitt now because of the 3 for 2 really.  thanks for the input.

Just happened to be walking to my car with my phone in my hand, so thought i would take a pic or two of the protection 3 months on.  Beads aren't quite as pretty as they were, though not sure if this is LSP degradation or the heavy rain that was coming down.  Could even just be a little dirty so Ill look again in lighter rain after a wash.  Was still a million miles better than the unprotected car parked next to me, and still looks great in the dry.

Did you apply anything during the last 3 months?

Was beading much better this morning, must have been the heavy rain droplets disturbing the beads as soon as they formed.

Yes chris bsd on every third wash, save for the one off experiment with pro 32/bsd. I'll maybe increase to every second as I rarely get wash it more than once a week.

Washing it will refresh the LSP beading anyway

So it will probably improve without adding more BSD yet
