How to disable MDI (getting my Dension Gateway Pro BT unit working)

Hi all!

I've just had a Dension Gateway Pro BT unit (GWP1V21DAB) installed in the car with my Columbus, see http://www.dension.com/sites/default/files/gateway-pro-bt/en/user-guide/gatewayprobt_user_manual.pdf and http://www.dension.com/sites/default/files/gateway-pro-bt/en/install-guide/gateway-pro-bt_install_guide.pdf for more info.

The installer said I needed to disable the built-in MDI to get the Dension unit to appear in the Maxidot etc. Right now I can't see any sign of it, Maxidot or Columbus screen. :(

Can any of you tell me how to do this in VCDS? The installation guide says:

"On CAN BAP based systems (like RCD310, 510 or RNS510) the Pro emulates the factory MDI (Multimedia Interface) and Telephone option which needs to be coded since Model Year 2011. If your vehicle has not been programmed before, the Media Player 3 (2E) and Telephone (7E) options have to be coded in order for the Pro to work correctly. Please note: Programming is not required if your vehicle had those options enabled before."

I have both "Media Player 3 (2E)" and "Telephone (7E)" ... I'm guessing the last one is a typo and should say "Telephone (77)"? ... both listed as modules in VCDS.

If any of you can help me getting this working, I'd be dead chuffed!

Thanks! :)

Personally I would suggest locating the unit and unplugging it.

When I added MDI to mine a while ago, it didn't require coding and all was good. When I removed it, MDI disappeared from the display and the head-unit didn't error.

Also, it really can't get any more disabled than being unplugged ;) ;)

I've been thinking about diving into the dash, but I'm reluctant to fiddle around too much as I've not installed the hardware myself. Just a precaution if something should happen to go wrong - warranty wise and so on.  ;) You might however be quite right, maybe the MDI needs to be unplugged. I've told the installer to order and install a connector port for easier maintenance/fiddling on my part in the future.

In regards to the VCDS coding, I've tried unchecking (and checking again) "Media Player 3 (2E)" and "Telephone (77)" in the 19-CAN Gateway controller section, but I haven't been able to spot any difference. Maybe the Dension unit needs to be rebooted or something, sadly I'm not able to reach it or its power cable at the moment. I can't even try to upgrade the firmware. The installer wanted it to be totally hidden, not even placed in the glovebox.

D'oh.  :wonder:
