Ignition key stuck

Featured Replies

I have a 2004 Octavia Mk II 2.0 TDI. Today my wife had a problem with the ignition key - with the engine running the key would not turn in order to turn off the engine. Eventually by turning the steering wheel back a forth a number of times the key was released and she was able to switch off and remove it.

We have been told by a local garage that we will need to replace the ignition barrel; but that will mean having one key for the doors (not a problem provided the remote is working) and one for the ignition. However, does the new key have to be synced with the EMU in order to operate? Does anyone know if this is a major job? What nasties might crawl out of the woodwork if we replace the ignition barrel?

Thanks for any advice you can give us.

Try cleaning your key and giving the key hole a good scoosh of WD-40 or similar.

As above.

If it doesn come to a new ignition barrell the dealer can order one for your car (no second key required).

They are made to fit to your key using VIN etc. No idea what they cost as I had one done under warranty.

They take about 6 weeks to order and deliver.

is the car a dsg?

+1, though I would use thin silicone grease, or silicone/teflon grease spray, does not attract anywhere as much dirt afterwards, and you want to keep the lock barrel clean.

+2      edit :notme:  would use a non grease  spray something thin and watery

Sorry for the delay in replying - we've had a bereavement and somehow problems with keys didn't seem so urgent. Thanks for all your suggestions. I have tried giving the key a good twist back and forth and so far the problem has not recurred. If it happens again I'll give some WD-40 or something non greasy. Thanks again!
