No Smoking & map testing

Featured Replies

Rather than drag on the topic in the "First Impressions" post for the VRS, thought I'd start a new thread.  Since buying my vRS (BLT) its smoked every time the revs climbed above 3000 rpm and at start up.

Whipping the EGR off revealed loads of gunk build up across the vertical valve shaft and around the bore, jamming the EGR part open. "Great" I thought...."problem solved" and the EGR was cleaned out spotless as was the ASV.  Did an EGR delete with blanking plate and re-map (factory map with EGR coded out) and tried it out.  Still smoking but running a lot better.  Long story short, whipped inlet manifold off and that was also completely gunked up..so it must have been reducing airflow to head enough to make the mixture rich.  Also noted was that the timing belt had camshaft at "-2" position instead of the middle position, so the pulley was moved one tooth to centre the camshaft.

Inlet manifold sent to specialist for cleaning in an acid cleaner bath followed by caustic dip to neutralise the acid. Came back looking factory fresh and shiny inside.  That's gone back in and hey presto...no more smoke, even at the red line.

Had a Quantum map installed and test drive made the car feel more like a petrol engined car. The 2 to 2.5K rev punch in the back from the turbo has vanished.  Its more gutsy from around 1200 RPM upwards and more linear so revs clean through to the redline from 1200 revs really linearly, which makes it feel slower, but timed runs revealed it was (much) faster.  Weird.  Tried factory map and it felt slow as hell, not at all like my 2004 vRS which was really punchy from standard.  No wheelspin at all.  Timed run to 60 was 8.5 to 9 seconds (factory map) measured with GPS.

Middle map then loaded (in between the full on and factory maps) and again, felt slow but a GPS timed sprint to 60 was 7.5 seconds.  Unlike the full beans Quantum map, there was no smoke evident to red line.  I guess it's kinder on the transmission and tyres, but part of the fun seems to have gone without that wrecking-ball punch!

I can recommend Quantum who were great throughout and produced a good custom map for the car.  Power is estimated to be around 155BHP.

Next step is to replace the KKK turbo with  Garret PD150 version which should bring back some punch!
