vRS newbie seeking advice

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Having just sold my car I am not in the position to go all out for finding my next chariot and for the past good few months I have been thinking about dipping my toe into the world of Skoda. A friend has a vRS and I have to admit that I quite like it.

I've had a shot in an '08 pre FL vRS and am sure that a vRS is for me. I'm on the hunt for a mk2 FL vRS

I've been looking up a fair bit on here but have some questions which I hope you guys might be able to help answer/advise me on:

  • One of the reasons for me going for a vRS is that I need a car that I can have the capability for towing but I've seen some comments where folk say that getting the electrics setup etc can be a pain in the backside. Max weight of trailer and car would be around 1500kg. Would a vRS be ok with towing this and not be a pain to get a towbar etc fitted without huge expense?
  • Some comments say to watch out for headlight units/panels etc to see if they have been replaced after any possible accident etc. Where would I find these dates?
  • If an ad say it has xeon lights...is there anyway to tell apart from seller/garage saying they are xeon?
  • Correct me if I am wrong but a TFSI engine has cambelt and needs changed every 4yrs or 60k miles and TSI has chain and shouldn't need changed? Any advanages/disadvantages between either of them?
  • Bolero or Columbus display unit...any real differences between them/which is better/preferred one?
  • Once I get my hands on a vRS I've seen that you can update the maxidot. Is there a specific VCDS cable best to use or would one off ebay allow changes to be made?
  • Should I be worried if a car doesn't have full Skoda service history but has local garage history?

Sorry if these are school boy questions but would rather sound a muppet but get the right answers. I've no doubt I have more questions but this forum is great and has already provided a good number of answers  :)

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Ed
