Fabia HU exchange for Octavia HU + Changer

Featured Replies

Hi , I am new to the site having just become the owner of a Fabia Tdi Elegance estate (2001 ). The Head Unit is the standard MS 402 radio Cassette. I have since purchased a HU and changer from an Octavia '05 model ( upgraded to DVD ). I had intended to fit this unit into the Fabia.

I took the unit to a Bristol Skoda dealer and was told that the unit was incompatible , the wiring loom from the Octavia is integrated and that I would need to replace the loom in the Fabia. The changer was OK and would be a straight fit and needed a wiring connector to take it to the HU.

If this is the case then I will have to sell the HU and changer. I would rather keep it if I can. Having spent some time reading the Tech Talk on the site I am sure that if this can be solved then this is the place to find the answer. i must add that I bought the HU and changer on ebay from a seller with a high rating who directed me to the site and has supplied the manuals and his contact details should I need the code etc for the HU.

The Skoda dealership seemed somewhat disinterested and were 'too busy' to come out and have a look at the car or unit , despite the fact that I would be happy for them to fit it and pay the going rate.

Thanks for reading this , Rich James

I replaced the standard head unit in our Fabia (2001 model) with the head unit and changer from a 2004 Octy some time ago.

You will need to change the software coding on the head unit from the octy and buy a cable to go from the Head unit to the changer.

The metal brakets and plastic surround to fit the changer in the drivers seat are quite cheap and can be ordered from the dealer

You will also need the security code for the head unit because you are using it in a different car.

I think you will also require a plastic trim to go around the head unit as the Octy unit is smaller than the Fabia's...

cheers

Dougal , I have an auto electrician calling in tomorrow (Monday) I guess he will have a VAG COM or be able to access the info ? Thanks for the Tech spec and the fitting advice , I looked under the passenger seat and saw that the space was too small . I take it that the front cover under the drivers seat is permanently removed ? I will order the fitting kit after the spark has visited , thanks again for your help . I will give you an update as soon as I can . Rich James

Hello Rich

The replacement plastic seat cover has a gap in the front to enable the CD changer cartridge to be extracted and the CD's changed easily.

It is made to work with the factory CD unit (which is smaller than most CD units) and the holes are already in the seat frame for the brackets to be screwed to.

The seat needs to come out to fix the brackets.

Ours is fitted in the drivers seat because the cubby hole is fitted in the passenger seat.

The reason the software needs changing is the Octy has an external display and the radio unit expects that to be fitted with its current software coding whereas the Furby does not have one.

Hope this helps
