brake upgrade what is needed

Recommended Posts

Suitable hubs with detachable carriers for the brake caliper. The 280mm disc ones have the caliper carrier cast as part of the hub, not usable.

This will mean using 55mm dampers as AFAIK all 312mm capable hubs require 55mm dampers.

The carrier bracket itself

312mm discs

New caliper mounting bolts, AFAIK they are single use stretch bolts, and brakes are not a place to cut corners.

The calipers and pads themselves are the same as you have now, and you can use the same flexible brake pipe.

New pads might be a good idea, especially with new discs.

Find a vRS or a Golf GTI or 147kw Jetta or 118tsi Mk6 might also be 312mm (they are in AU).

Better still, if you can find a late model Passat that is being wrecked & get the hub carriers, brakes, Lower Control arms all in 1 package. The hub carriers & LCAs are alloy & you'll lose about 4kg per side.

For the cost & faffing about, can you achieve your braking goals sticking with 280 & fitting good pads & rotors & flushing the brake fluid every 12 months? Maybe add some additional cooling?
