electric aux heater install

Featured Replies

Hi all, well i'm going ahead with the install on my 2008 2.0 tdi elegance after doing some reading up on it. Up to now I've removed some trim and located where the heater slots in. I'm still unsure about how to connect the small wires to the loom and there is no mention of relays, just that you connect the positive up at the fuse box through a 100amp fuse. I tried to see if it would work on the garage floor using a 12v supply to the main +ve and -ve threaded posts on the heater but nothing happened, so I don't know whether it is switched on through the small wires plugged into the side of the unit via a command form the ecu, or whether its a dud before I've even started.  I did purchase another type which just has the heavy wires so if i'm stuck i'll just wire this one in myself through a relay and switch. When I did a continuity check with my multi meter the check was fine on the more basic heater but got no reading at all on the more advanced one. i'm no electrician but I would have thought you'd need a circuit to get it to work. any ideas anyone ??

Chances are the small wires will be a canbus connection if it is an oem unit but don't hold me to that.

i'm following an old thread off a vw forum where someone fitted one of these heaters to a golf fitted with climatronic, there was a picture up where the pedals are showing a group of wires taped together and a large red plug going into a box, you had to open the wires up to find the correct 2 wires and splice into them, then using a vagcom find and select the aux heater so the unit knows you have one installed. it then switches on under the right conditions until the engine is up to 75 degrees then cuts it out. however i cant find this anywhere in my Octavia so as a last resort I've got one of the more basic elements that just have the heavy wires and may just fit that one and wire it through a relay and manual switch and a light to remind me so i don't forget to switch it off again. i'd like to get it done soon though as its getting cold now and my fingers are freezing working on the car. thanks for the reply, am i the only person who's done this ??
