Peep Peep.... Horn Broken?

Featured Replies

I think I remember the horn being a nice, meaty two-tone. However I don't use it enough to be familiar with it. I used it for the first time the other day after having had the new gearbox and was presented with a jolly, single-tone "peeeeep", which rather took the sting out of the reason for using it. Rather than "OI! Don't change lanes into me, idiot!" I got more of a "ahem.... excuse me, hope you don't mind me mentioning that I am, sort of, in the place you seem to want to occupy".

I assume that a plug has been disturbed, or not reconnected, after the gearbox work. Firstly, am I correct in remembering a two-tone horn? If so, secondly, where are they and how can I get at them? I have had a good Sunday morning stare at the engine bay but can't see anything. I found a page online that described the process of accessing them, but it wasn't written well enough for me to match what it said vs what I could see.

Any first-hand, practical advice?

Partscat has images of the horns ("fanfares") themselves, but doesn't show where they are unfortunately:

(Note: It shows two different types...both are listed for a 2011 year)

However, a while back Joel Shoemark posted a photo of his Yeti with the front bumper off, and you can just see the horn in the lower right corner of the image:

If you look through the his photos looks like one on the right and one on the left, both look accessible through the front wheel arch.  although the right one is in front of the washer bottle maybe a bit of a pain to reach.

Aha! That makes sense now. I just need to work out which is out and how to get at it.

Ever thought of fitting a pair of airhorns??

They are flippin' LOUD and don't say "OI! Don't change lanes into me, idiot!" but they DO say "HEY AR5EHOLE, GET OUTTA MY SPACE OR I'LL SMASH YE TEEF IN!!!!!!"

Maybe the earth wire was disturbed.

Just to follow-up, I believe that the two different horn types are market-dependent.  We get the twin horns, one mounted either side of the front.  The India-specific model gets the two round horns mounted together.  I guess in India they need a reliable and robust horn system, given the amount of use they get!  (I speak from experience, not from ignorant stereotyping).

When the weather improves I'll see if I can get at it myself.  Otherwise it's going back (again) to the dealer who did the gearbox.  It's under warranty still anyway.
