Just replaced the window mechanism FDS window, now the  release handle is just about at the end of its travel before the door opens. I notice there is a hole under the door catch with a screw, is this for taking up any slack in the operating cable. (please say yes) or have I to strip the door down again

Have a look at the two links in post number 2 here...    http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/334637-central-locking/..

There is a cable that attaches to the exterior door handle and has a range of adjustment.

As you suggest, I think you need to take up some of the slack.  If you undo that screw under the door catch, you should be able to access where the cable attaches to the door handle. There is a serrated area on the handle to allow a degree of adjustment.

That should sort it out.
