Turbo or not?

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered before.

Skoda superb 58plate 2.0tdi SE

The car has lost power, it's like the turbo isn't kicking in, won't rev past 4000rpm, blowing a bit of blue out the back. No lights on the dash, no dtc faults even in the memory. All the turbo hoses seem sound as does the unit itself. I'm thinking along the lines of actuator (but I'm not sure how you check this), MAF? Throttle position sensor? I had a similiar problem with a jeep Cherokee a while back and that was an injector causing starvation but surely some of these should have chucked me a code?

Possible blown intercooler had a similar problem on a volvo s60 d5 and it was a blown intercooler

I don't think I've ever revved mine above 3 k

2.0tdi <snip> won't rev past 4000rpm

No codes? At all? have you noticed the drop in performance suddenly or is it a loss of power over time?

Nothing at all code wise! I'm not sure about how it occurred as it was like this when I got it.

Have you driven a similar 140 engined Superb? I think it's maybe between your ears, since there are no codes...also, there might be a rev limiter active, there certainly is one when stationary.

Yours is the PD Diesel engine, correct? In which case you'll be running out of puff quite early in the rev band, compared to any CR Diesel engine.

There is defo a problem, it's barely drivable, it won't go up a 3% incline on the motorway above 40mph, I'm not sure if it's the PD engine, it's the mk2 model

booked in tomorrow so hopefully we can shed some light?

If its 2008, then it would be a PD.  The common rail 140 was launched around 2010 or so.  The only engine that was CR from the launch of the MKII was the 170

£100 diagnostic later and says the turbo vanes have play. It still spins up ok tho? There was a big disclaimer that a new turbo may NOT solve the problem,

New turbo fitted......no change

Balls.

I vote for taking it to another garage. Any diesel specialists near you?

I'm out of options, egr checked, tp sensor changed, maf changed, boost sensor changed, every pipe checked.......money pit

What you describe is normally an induction pipe that has come off,

I'm not sure where they are on yours but start with all the ones that lead to the air filter housing although you'd think a mechanic who can fit a turbo would check this already so maybe not,

Other idea's?

Fuel pump in the rear seat, get your head down on the seat behind the driver one and listen for the hum, no hum and the pump has packed up,

Something known as an N75 valve on other VAG cars, this is something near the turbo itself and a weak point so get that checked as well,

Has anyone checked the operation of the injectors?

Is the blue smoke still happening since the new turbo?

Fuel filter?

I'll try and have a look at the above suggestions, it has been put on the backburner for now until someone I am confident in to fix it comes along, it has been to vag specialists and to be fair they didn't tell me anything I didn't know, I have just invested in some dealer level diagnostics and have VCDS on its way too but so far it's not telling me much, the values all seem ok on every data set I look at. I can't seem to find much on the Cbbb engine though in the way of values and parameters so it's purely guesswork. If anyone knows someone in lancs who you think might be up to the job let me know. Also is any forum members want a cheap diagnostic then get in touch and I'll sort you out.

Just my 2p - I think it will help if you work out exactly what engine you have - CBBB is 2L TDI 170 fitted between 06/08 and 05/10, not a 140 as indicated in your profile. This list should help. http://vag-codes.info/files/engines/skoda-engines.pdf You should be able to confirm on the sticker on the bodywork between the front and back doors on the driver's side. At least that will be a small (but vital) part of the puzzle solved! Hope you get it sorted.

Another vote for the fuel filter, partially block it would give your symptoms, with no codes

Cheers guys, jack it is Defo cbbb as I just guessed when I did my profile. I actually really like this car and I think I might buy or lease a new one on the back of it, even with its problems. I have passed the point of turning a profit on it so it's more a personal mission now!
