tdi 1.6 car won't start flashing glow plug

Featured Replies

Hi

I am seriously starting to lose faith in this car. I bought this car one year ago today and I woke to another flashing glow plug but this time the car won't start. The car is a 62 plate  and had 5000 miles on the clock when I bought it. It now has 18000 miles on it. Two moths after I bought it was the 1st flashing glow plug light skoda assit came out and put a new pressure censor on it.

Then another flashing light 2 moths later another glow plug light egr fault this time had to get a new wiring loom as a wire was chaffing on something. I got the car back and two days later the heaters were only working on setting 4. That turned out to be a resister pack for the heater. I was lucky in a way as all these things happen when I was on my days of from work, but this morning at 4 30 am when the car would not start I had to take the wife's car and make her take the bus lol she is not happy. Anyways skoda assit are on there way so hopefully it, l be an easy fix or they may have to hire a car for me over Christmas does anyone have any ideas what it could be this time ? Do you think I've been unlucky or have I bought a lemon. I am sure the neighbours are like there's the guy with the skoda getting it fixed again I, m  thinking of asking the skoda assit guy for his personal number. I will let you all know how I get on fingers crossed.

I can't help you mate, but good luck and hope it works out well.

Hi Firefox 2

sorry to learn of your problems. I had a 1.4 (3 cyl) TDI this was a brilliant motor until I wrote it off!

I replaced this with a 1.6 TDI in 2011. From about the 3000 mile mark - it was a recurring glow plug light flashing marathon - but WORSE - as on each occasion the car went into limp mode. I will not bore everyone with the number of times the car went into the dealers OR that skoda assist were called out,

We were never without a car as the local dealer were outstanding in their support. Despite every effort, the problem was never solved (during my ownership) - every sensor was replaced - turbo was changed three times - EGR valve also, the list goes on and on. Enough was enough, so at 12000 miles in 2013, I changed to a 1.2 SE TSI 86. I miss the MPG of the diesel, but am happy with the performance of the TSI - its a nice car.

The 1.6 TDI we learnt later, failed on the motorway as the dealer was transferring it to another branch/site within its group. We were told that the car had a total rewire, which apparently cured the problem. (We had already had a partial under-bonnet rewire during my ownership.)

When I read now of the many recurring problems with this engine, IE premature failure of the EGR valves etc and the expenses incurred, the recurring DPF issues, I shudder to think what true cost of ownership will be for the many owners out there. One thing is certain the 1.6 TDI is not a town run around car like its predecessor was (the PD engine).

If you can get a reasonable deal from your skoda dealer, consider it seriously!

I wonder what the new diesel 2015 model will be like?

Please keep all on this forum updated - we all have an interest in the outcome.

Update skoda assit been out and the light was still flashing and would not start when he tried. He kept cranking it for ages then the light went out and it started. He switched it on then of about a half dozen times and said it seems to be ok now.

I asked him if he could plug his computer in to read the fault code but he said there was no point as his computer could not read the g flashing glow plug. He said I, l try it and show you his computer did say there was no fault.

He said whatever the problem was it was fuel related he said it could be one of three things  1 a sticky fuel pump 2 as it's winter the diesel might be waxing I doubt this at its not been cold for the last week. 3 something blocking the fuel pump and now it's sorted.

He has advised me to book it in to the skoda garage and have them check it over i took it for a 20 mile run and filled it up with v power to help clean things out i had a half tank left. I won't get a chance to get it in to the dealers till after the new year so i hope it lasts. It is running well so hopefully it's sorted.
