Guardsman dog guard and divider

Featured Replies

Hello and Happy New Year all !

We've had a Yeti for a few years and, since last summer, we also own a dog (a 6 month old whippet).  So far the dog has traveled in a soft crate in the boot.  This has been a good solution and very easy to remove when not required.  However, the crate only fits length ways if we remove or tip forward the middle rear seat.  A lesser issue is that the side rear seat has to be slid forward forward and can't be full reclined.  We'd also like the dog to have a bit more room for longer journeys, so I'm looking at other options.  I came across the Guardsman dog guard and boot divider.  https://www.dogcages.uk.com/catalog/skoda/skoda-yeti/

We have no spare wheel, but they have an option for that.

Just wondered if anyone has used this product in a Yeti ?   My only concern would be how quick/simple is is to remove when it's not required  - when we want to use the full boot for bikes or furniture etc.    There's also a small concern that the dog could jump out as soon as the boot is opened (or before the boot is closed - she's not a big fan of cars our whippet :D   We could probably work around those issues though.

Personally I use a standard crate for our dog which fits in the boot without any problem.

This also addresses the security issues when you open the rear hatch.

Another advantage is that it takes seconds to fold up and can be stored behind a cupboard etc

I do have a spare wheel and my dog is a springer spaniel bitch about 16kg in weight

We have transported her across Europe like that without any problems, although there is little room for anything else in the boot

We found she got used to it especially if you use it when you take her for long walks transporting her in the car.

A further advantage is we put an old towel on the top of the cage which stops the muck spraying all over the head lining when she shakes herself after a walk when she can be a bit filthy!

This the one I bought--it's a lot cheaper option as well

Thanks - I'm looking for something I can leave in place most of the time though - we're often taking the dog in the car down to the beach etc. and with 2 kids to organise, it's easier if everything is in the car 'ready to go'

The soft crate we have is small enough to do that and also leave some boot space free.  Also, because it's top loading we can easily dump shopping bags inside it (if we don't have the dogs with us)  or lightweight things like coats on top of it.  Only problem is the dog is outgrowing the crate.  It's larger than it looks in this pic, because we have no boot floor.  It's OK for 20 min to the beach but the dog needs a bit more space for longer trips.  If I could find a soft crate a bit shorter/wider and taller that might do the job, but then i thought this dog guard / boot divider might be ideal

I leave my wire crate in most of the time--I permanently remove the parcel shelf

One of the pluses of the wire crate you can put quite heavy stuff on top of it. The crates come in different sizes to suit. I was after one where I could still use the back seats.

I went to one of those pet superstores to try them out and they were no trouble about opening the boxes etc. I wasn't too cheeky--- I have another crate for the dog where she sleeps in the house as well. There's enough room down the side of my crate for a pair of boots and a medium sized rucksack. Coats, leads etc get chucked on the top of the crate.

A whippet can probably manage with a smaller crate than I have. It's a mistake to get one too large as they feel more secure in a crate they can sort of snuggle into , if that makes sense, but it is important they can stand up. They feel more secure with a sense of enclosure--we have a blanket over all our crates as she seemed to settle better that way--I suppose it makes it a bit like a den.

For soft crates I did have one but didn't like it[ she chewed the zips]--got it from zooplus--they do have a good selection

We use a sloping metal crate for our Irish Terrier. In and out in a couple of minutes and a handy travel kennel for hotels etc. I secure it to one of the luggage bars with a webbing strap. One advantage of the raised (spare wheel) boot floor is that she can enjoy the view of lesser vehicles disappearing into the distance :)
