Carrying Capacity on a Tow Hitch

Featured Replies

Hi to everyone,

I`ve tried doing a search for the question I have about what would be the carrying capacity of a Tow Hitch.

If I was to use a Flange or a Swan Neck, this would be to use on the average Roomster which I don`t own yet but thinking about owning.

I would like to know what are the limits of actual weight allowed ?

This for carrying a Dave Cooper Rack for various small motorbikes.

Noseweight

This is also termed "Maximum Static Vertical Load" and on an EC approved towbar is printed on the label as "S Value." Simply put, it is the maximum permissable vertical load applied to the top of the towball. This weight includes any additional weight, for instance if you are using a towbar mounted cycle carrier whilst towing. You must not exceed this weight when loading your trailer or caravan.

That might help.

It seems EC approved towbars have a rating for exactly what you require.

Roomster has 50kg noseweight limit

Yes 50kg is the noseweight limit for towing.

I would think that when not towing the safe figure would be much greater. It would depend on how the car is loaded. The safe load on the axle is clearly greater than 50kg. The tow hitch will obviously carry much more than 50kg without danger of breaking. I would check with the manufacturer of whatever secondary bracket you intend to use.

Obviously only my opinion.

The 50kg limit is exactly that. Its the legal limit above which you can be prosecuted, regardless of what you have loaded the towball with (trailer/bikes/mother in law). It is vehicle specific due to how the tow bar mounting points are designed (the point around which the bar would rotate under load, for example). It is also towbar specific due to the design of that. You have to go with the lower of the two.

Thank you all for the replies.

I was not sure where to even look as in the wordings to find my answer. `Maximum Static Vertical Load and S Value` there is a lot of reading there.

The weight of this small trail bike is close to 70Kg which is light. I would like to be taking the bike over to France and beyond this summer.

Now thinking that a small trailer that is able to take apart and put it in the luggage area is the next step.

Cheers Chris
