Tefal actifry

Any good ?

I got one for literally a few quid as my daughter worked in a kitchen shop. Brilliant for practically fat free chips. I just put some cut potatoes in with paprika and a fraction of oil (sometimes none) and they are lovely. A bit of a pain to store but easy enough to take apart, clean and put back together.

a mate's got one and swears by it. Literally, he's a bit of a sweary sod. But, he uses it all the time for chips, chicken, pork etc etc.

I had one sold it for £50, after using it 4 or 5 times over a period of a year!

Just could not get enough in it, to feed 4 adults a decent portion of chips, never mind trying to squeeze any sausages or nuggets in..

Also IMHO it takes a huge amount of electricity to do what it does, even oven chips which were part cooked took 20 mins plus on full heat.

Scampi gets turned into bare bits of fish and leaves you with a bowl full of breadcrumbs, as the agitator peels away the breadcrumb outer.

Also takes about an hour to cool down to safely stow away in a cupboard, after use.

Waste of £150 for me but you may find it suits you.

Just seems like a lot of hard work with cleaning etc just to get a few chips.

Gone back to almost 100% oven cooking now.

I would agree its no good for more than 2-3 portions but the original I have takes similar time and I imagine similar electric to the oven to cook chips.

I like ours - chips without the guilt!

IMHO - brilliant.  Mine's the 1kg model (2-3 portions of chips) but 1.2kg and 1.5kg models are available.

It has made my deep fat fryer obsolete.

All the bits that need cleaning are dishwasher safe.

Mine's rated at 1.4 kW but temperature is thermostatically controlled.

Cooks excellent chips in 20 - 25 minutes

I've had mine four years and it gets a lot of use.

Brilliant bit of kit, got mine given off my grandparent after they couldn't figure out how to use it. Loved it so much, we got rid of our deep fat fryer, not all chips/sautéed/roast potatoes are done in this.

Does it smell as bad as the deep fat fryer?

There are different size Actifry's. Sounds like you had the 1kg. The 1.5kg (family) easily cooks for 4 :)

The electricity costs for an ActIfry are about half of the costs needed to cook chips in an oven. Typically 4 portions of chips in an actifry will have an energy cost of less than 10p. (1.45 kwh x 30mins @ 11p / kwh). Additionally, there are no warm up costs associated with an oven, which typically run at 3kw.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Actifry, but make sure you get the largest capacity model.

Cleaning is easy. Remove the pan & place in dishwasher, wipe the body of the machine. Done in less than 1 min. Mine still looks new after using it every werk for 2 years :)

I tend to put everything in the oven, baked beans/sausages/scampi(etc) chips or wedges and the plates. The only thing that gets fried is an egg in olive oil.

Just found firing up the actifry to get decent chips/wedges was not worth it and as said stick your scampi in there or your fish fingers and they get striped of any coating.

It claims to do lots of things But IMHO it is just not worth the hassle and loss of worktop area too :)

The person that had mine off me swears by it but it obviously fits there cooking style.

Probably best that I add, I do not own or never had a deep fat fryer; so maybe if you are looking at this as an alternative then it is a 1000 times better/healthier than that :)

Very little smell - we used to use the deep fat fryer outside on the back terrace because of the smell - no problem with the Tefal  :sun:

There is hardly any smell because it cooks with just 1 tablespoon of hot oil instead of (possibly) 1 litre.

No mess, no hot oil fumes, no fire hazard, no tipping hazard, no used oil to get rid of.

IMHO it's the only way to cook chips.

Great for cubed Sweet potato/carrots/parsnips, and home made chips with a splash of olive oil.

Also good to cook Aldi/Lidl frozen chips.

Nothing beats a good deep fat fryer using quality oil but they are a pain in the ass to keep clean.

Ours is always in use. If you use your imagination, there are loads of uses for it in addition to chips/wedges.

I good investment, as far as I'm concerned.
