My standard mk1 vrs has begun to make a dull drone noise from the front end .  Only hear it above 40mph really.  I've had both front wheel bearings done within the last 20k miles and it doesn't sound like that kind of noise.   

Now on 117K miles and due its timing belt service at 120k.

 

When travelling at 60/70 and I take car out of gear noise doesn't change pitch or reduce so I assume a drive train issue.

 

Any other suggestions as to where to look for a problem or fix? 

...also due to drive a 380 mile round trip at the weekend.  Guess I will be taking the wifes car!!
