2001 Octavia 1.9 tdi clutch problem

Featured Replies

I've had my Octavia 1.9 tdi (90) from new and other the the usual fayre (electric windows, pedal box, etc) its done very good service. Today I've just had a clutch issue but I'm looking for a better diagnosis than that as the cars getting on and I'm wondering whether its worth the cost of the repair. That said the car is very tidy indeed condition wise and sails thgrough MOT etc..

Pulling out of a junction the car revved and the drive (gears) wouldn't engage. It also gives a high pitch when when the clutch is depressed. Yesterday I through possibly it was having a tiny (notchy) issue taking first but thought maybe it was my imagination. Today it drove fine till the above. There was no burning smell typical of a clutch going bang or indication of wear and its only approx. 4 years and 20K from new one having being fitted (a VW dealership).

I'm thinking it could be a variety of things. Anyone had this before themselves? The high pitch whine and the sudden fail and if so what was the prognosis?

Thank you for all help.

Know one at all have similar? I'm thinking either the DMF or the clutch release bearing. Would the whining noise when I press the clutch - there's no go in the car but it still whines when I press the clutch - indicate one or the other?

Ok, I'll disregard mention of mileage, because driving style is much more relevant to clutch wear. It's also more relevant to DMF wear.

I've seen someone wear out a clutch in TWO thousand miles, but their "technique" was to rev to ~4_000 rpm, and and control acceleration using clutch slip.

The usual symptoms of a worn clutch you know (at least if I'm reading your OP right); worn DMFs tend to be noisy (and are worn more by people using cruelly low revs when accelerating, so if you habitually change up at 1_500 you're a suspect) rather than slippy.

Also IMO any decent garage will replace the release bearing when replacing the drive plate.

Thanks for the reply. My Indi garage who's bonkers busy thinks its the Clutch Bearing but is as you suggest is replacing the whole clutch. What made me wonder were the no warning signs re problems other than a little hesitancy to take 1st the day before. I could be a DMF suspect but my garage thinks its unlikely and the whining noise indicates bearing as opposed to DMF. The don't want to fit a SMF - suggesting its unnecessary - and think a new clutch will do the job. I'm not sure.

How long does it take to drop the 'box on an FWD car? This is why usual technique is to replace the thrust bearing when it's apart for a new driven plate anyway. The DMF can be tested for normal operation at the same time.
